Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Mar 09, 2020 9:31 pm Hi, looking for some advice/suggestions I have a bit of land 10 m x 6 m on top of a retaining wall at the rear of my house. It's recently been enclosed by the installation of a patio above. Since its enclosure the ground has totally dried out, and because its a high clay content soil its now like an undulating solid lump of rock. i'd like to finish the surface in something that will let us use the space a bit more. A reasonably flat floor my daughter could ride her scooter on, maybe a bit of outdoor furniture etc.. At the highest point the ground is probably 20 mm below the level of the wall, at the lowest points its probably about 100 mm below the edge of the wall. Whats the easiest/cheapest way to surface this ground? Could i just pour a thin layer of concrete over the top and try and scree it level? would it just crack at the highest points? would i need re-o etc.. ? I think levelling the clay would be tricky so i'm wondering if that's avoidable. Or would pavers be more affordable/easier? any recommendations? ball park costs etc.. cheers In the end, two pieces of treated timber (20mm thick) were bolted onto the joists and planed when there was too much sticking out. Passed inspection. 13 7122 I would find out how deep your clay base is and depending on the depth install a cut off drain which is more than a normal agi drain.
