Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Sep 03, 2008 4:46 pm Hi.
I'm looking in to getting a new driveway (and some associated paths) to replace my existing plain concrete. Problem is my driveway is quite steep and long-ish ~ 10 metres. I don't know how to explain the fall to give you all an idea of the slope but the excavation at the front of our yard for our retaining wall was 1.7 metres high at it's highest point I love love love the look of exposed aggregate. And since I also am in a 'green' area and will be planting natives almost exclusively it seems to suit the look of agg very nicely. But I went to a display centre today to snoop and there was an agg driveway that had cracked quite badly and it was virtually flat Someone recommended asphalt but I am not sold on the look entirely. Besides which, I have seen plenty of cracked or pock marked roads/footpaths done in asphalt! ANy experts out there ...or people with steep drives who can give me some tips and hints and other words of wisdom Thanks! as long as compacted road base is installed, correct reo. size and min. 100mm thick with correctly placed control joints then the cracks wont be seen by you (concrete always cracks, these cracks are in the control joints) with a steep drive a strip footing should also be installed at lowest point of driveway to help stop subsidence (driveway sliding down slope) and the canter lever affect look at www.mentonepremix.com.au Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: Best surface for steep driveway? 3Sep 04, 2008 6:35 pm Thanks for your reply! Can you explain what a strip footing is?
Re: control joints. Our current driveway has, as you suggest, controlled cracks...but there were also another 2 besides. One in particular is quite bad and goes from the control joint placed approx midway then zig zags down the middle of the driveway to the drainage point directly infront of the garage door. Can control joints be positioned north south? Ours are placed vertically/east west [4 in total] , all the other drives I have seen are the same; no control joints down the middle I guess the advantage of replacing our existing driveway is knowing where it has cracked and not been controlled...I hope there is scope to say to the contractor 'hey I want a control joint here' Thanks again Re: Best surface for steep driveway? 4Sep 05, 2008 4:24 pm Strip footing:
Think of the concrete footing underneath a brick wall that you bury in the ground. Gives it a solid "footing" upon which to build the wall that will keep the wall from sinking, moving by plants etc. Then take this same idea in your head and lay it horizontally accross and underneath the lowest point of the driveway. Greg Re: Best surface for steep driveway? 7Oct 03, 2008 4:03 pm work out your approach and departure angle of your car/s and then you have you maximum drive angle.
other than cobble impression expossed agg. would be best for steep driveway. The concrete needs sealing so in the sealer a non slip bead can be added for additional grip Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Hi All It has been a few weeks since my last update.
