Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Apr 30, 2017 11:58 pm Hi all, I am back again looking for advice. I have just had a carport built for our caravan that I hope will arrive around the end of May. On the edge of the carport the builder has left short lengths (about 300mm) of 12mm rio rod sticking up to go into my low retaining wall about 400mm high which will have a colorbond fence on top. Before pouring the retaining wall I intend to dynabolt some 50x50x4mm posts (open at the bottom) for a fence to the concrete floor and weld more rio rod between the posts and to the 300mm vertical rio rod embedded in the concrete and rio rod for some buttresses into the side bank. Because I expect this project to take a while and because of other commitments and the caravan arrival will mean a holiday to try it out and with winter coming along I am worrying that the rio rod will rust before it is concreted as the 300mm bits are already but I can buff them up. Is there any acceptable rust preventative for rio rod that will not affect its grip inside concrete such as fish oil WD40 or paint? A second question. I have allowed for a retaining wall and fence the full length of the carport but we have changed our minds and will only have it 2/3s of the length of the carport so I want to remove some of the rio rod sticking up from the floor of the carport. I propose to get a couple of stone cutting 125mm angle grinder discs and cut down through the concrete and rio to bring it 15mm to 20mm below the concrete floor then treat the exposed steel with a good metal primer (Wattyle Killrust heavy duty primer) let it dry then use bondcrete on the concrete and mix some bondcrete with a sand and cement screed and fill the hole with that. Can anyone comment on what they think of this method or a better method such as an epoxy mix. I am only removing 4 rods so I would not want to buy a large amount of epoxy. Thanks in advance for any comments To err is human but to really mess things up, you need a computer. Re: Stop new rio rod from rusting till job is completed 2May 01, 2017 5:39 pm I would leave the reo for the moment and give it a bit of a wire brush before you concrete to remove any loose flakes. A bit of surface rust makes a good bond with the concrete and the alkaline nature of the concrete will stop any further rust. Don't see any problem with what yo are proposing where you have deleted the wall. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Stop new rio rod from rusting till job is completed 3May 01, 2017 8:41 pm Thanks for your reply bashworth, that sounds good and I have been doing some reading on the net and I see that welding rio bar as I planned to weld it to the posts can cause problems if you don't have the correct rods and the correct type of rio bar so I now plan to use some old mild steel bolts and weld them as spigots on the side of the posts then wire them to the rio bar.
