Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Feb 20, 2017 8:21 pm I know it's a bit unconventional but I'd like to use some paving as an area for my son to practice his basketball. Only a small area of 3m x 4m. It would be over the old 'foundations' of a shed that's been pulled down. What is left are some long concrete foundations around the edge (about 12cm wide), the inside filled with dolomite. It's already nicely compacted as the tin shed was there for a long time. I had a concreter look at it and he thought it would crack unless all is removed - which makes it expensive. Hence the reason for paving over the top. First is that feasible? I figure paving would work better and allow some movement (that would otherwise crack a concrete surface). Secondly assuming it is, what would be the best sort of pavers considering the fact that being flat is best for a bouncing basketball? My wife reckons big flat ones 'cos they'd be 'flatter' but I figure brick shaped ones are cheap and easy to come by second-hand (I'll get a pro to lay them) plus a small amount of movement will be taken up by a group of pavers and any resulting deviations will be more a gradual curve, than a 'sudden step' if using large pavers. What do you think? Re: Paving for mini basketball court area 3Mar 24, 2017 8:59 pm As a basketball addict of some 30 years, I can't express to you strongly enough to NOT use pavers. Even the slightest undulation in a surface can affect how the ball bounces, and how it feels under foot. Concrete it (straight over the dolomite), and put in extra control joints to control the cracking. It'll be a surface that won't be slippery when wet, won't have weeds and moss growing through the inevitable holes in paving, and will last a lot longer. You don't need to remove what's there. It would be better if you do and start from scratch, which will also allow you to increase the size marginally... 3x4 is barely enough for the key area under the ring let alone a 3pt line. But don't go pavers mate. completely unsuitable for a ball gaming area. I've filled, levelled and compacted around 100mm of roadbase in preparation to lay some outdoor court tiles.
