Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Nov 25, 2015 9:46 pm Hi ...... we have recently completed building our new house, and it has a steep-ish driveway. It has been completed with an anti-slip coating, but its still slippery when wet. We're looking at ways to fix it. Even if it means getting a whole new surface applied. We really don't want pebblecrete. I've heard exposed aggregrate is good, but am wondering what other options are out there? Thanks in advance!! Re: Steep, slippery driveway........ looking for suggestions 3Nov 28, 2015 5:45 pm thanks for your reply...... its not super steep, but steep enough to be far too slippery when wet. yes, aesthetics need to take second place to safety. any suggestions as to what to coat it with?
Re: Steep, slippery driveway........ looking for suggestions 5Nov 29, 2015 11:07 am The driveway, in total, is about 8-9 metres. The council crossover part is about 2.5 and is fairly level. Near the garage is also fairly level (about 2.5 metres), but the 3-4 metres in the middle has a roughly 25-30 degree slant. plus, due to the slope of the land, it slopes side-to-side as well. Higher on the right, down to lower on the left. Most of the houses around here are more split level/two storey and have cut in more, so don't have the same issue. If we had realised the slope that our driveway would be on, we would have requested that they drop the garage down lower, but on the plans it looked better/easier than it has turned out. Whilst we don't want to rip out the driveway and start it again, I'm hoping there is some sort of product that can be applied/sprayed on that will give it enough texture to be safer in the wet than it currently is.

If it is not colour through, then surface roughening may look awkward/after thought. BTW For safety, Ramps/driveways should have a gradual slope of less than 1:8-1:10 Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Steep, slippery driveway........ looking for suggestions 7Nov 29, 2015 12:11 pm You want to make sure that the driveway was built according to the council guidelines/and or your final plans and not what was easiest or cheapest for the concretor or builder. Most councils will allow you a bit of latitude in this area as well to compensate for sloping land. A more gradual slope would have been good, but it is what it is, so now I just need to work with what we've got! Stewie It's all been approved, so I'm guessing that it is all ok with council. no doubt it was the easiest/cheapest for the concretor and builder though! Re: Steep, slippery driveway........ looking for suggestions 10Nov 29, 2015 12:43 pm Yes I would say you are guessing, did they supply Council Drawing/Engineering details?...check with the Council Building Dept as already mentioned by StewieD! Which he did give. You can usually download the requisite guideline drawings from your council website. An example from our local council... Hi Venessa...... yes, indeed we did find a solution! We found a local concretor who ground the driveway back to concrete (ie: got rid of the sealant that was causing it to be slippery) and sprayed it with a coarse cement mix in a brick type pattern. The pattern helps give it a bit more grip as there are "edges" to the pattern which gives more grip. Nobody has slipped on it since! It cost about $3,000 (ouch!) but it really had to be done. Hope this helps! Cheers, Gilly.
