Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jun 30, 2008 10:43 am Hi all,
Has anyone had any experience with oaving arounda pool or spa? The B.I.L has just had a fibreglass pool installed, and need tofind dos and donts regardng paving around pools, especially attaching or laying the bull nosed edge pavers. The concreting around the sides of the pool will be done this week (after a plumbing inspection), and drainage will flow away fromt he pool into semi hiden drains.\ The issue I have is whether the bullnose pavers are glued / concreted / attached to the pool edge. the paver / tile installation all depends on the type of tile / paver etc and how flat (not plump/level) the concrete beam is if the pool company installes the beam then you can almost guarantee the beam wont be flat natural stone ie : marble, sandstone etc i use on a flat beam / slab an exterior stone adhesive with a 12mm notch trowel but it must be rubber based not cement based. cement based adhesive can leach salts etc through natural stone and with expansion and contraction the concrete, the tiles etc can pop up if the adhesive isnt rubber based, you need dependant on size of pool expansion joints also in grout joints every 3 - 5 mtrs i use coloured caulking compound to match grout colour when doing your cuts around corners dont cut just one side of paver / tile to get your angle etc. cut both pavers / tiles on both side so u dont have such a jaggered outer edge etc the adhesive i use is generally kera-bond for most cement based pavers / tiles etc and also clay based u need to install using wet on wet method ie : make a paste out of gp cement and water bit runnier than toothpaste paint this onto concrete beam and then put your mortar down then paint the back of paver etc with paste and install to height and fall required when using mortar dont use brick sand only use washed sand a 4 sand to 1 cement ratio with plasticiser and acrylic modifier brick sand reacts with salt and chlorine and breaks down dont use bondcrete as additive it is water based and breaks down over time in your grout use a 3 washed sand to 1 brighton light cemtn ratio with what ever colour oxide dont use plasticiser but still use acrylic modifier pool paving isnt something i recommend a non paver to do if you dont have extensive experience in pool paving / construction another thing semi hidden drains block up and cant be cleaned without pulling up pavers. i always use stainless steel gatic drains (strip drains) what suburb are you in? and who installed pool Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: Pool Paving 3Jun 30, 2008 11:26 pm Hey DV, Not sure of the pool company, but its the Lara job I PM'd u a wjhile ago. stay away from melbourne stone pavers one of the worst pavers available the surface of them wears off in 6 odd mnths and in about 5 seconds when u pressure clean them have you looked at natural stone? sandstone, limestone etc trade is about $72 sqm for calibrated veneers or cheaper option urbanstone saw cut residential bout $50 odd a sqm retail www.urbanstone.com.au i can supply random bluestone for about $58 sqm plus del.
