Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jan 31, 2015 7:52 pm Hi! Trying to make a desicion on what to do, we are building a new home and the builder MacCarthy homes is building a waffle pot slab, our idea was to polish the floor downstairs with a grey industrial look, spoke to the concreter and he told me the cracks with waffle pot slab are too notorious and he wouldn't do it if was him? Please I need advice and if there is some one that have done a polish floor on a waffle pot slab and tell me their experience or pictures will help lots! Thanks Re: Polish concrete in a waffle pot slab 4Feb 01, 2015 8:47 am Carorey But do you think the slab will crack badly? being waffle pot? Have you seen it? Short answer-YES, but you can control the cracking at a cost Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Polish concrete in a waffle pot slab 5Feb 01, 2015 10:16 am Carorey But do you think the slab will crack badly? being waffle pot? Have you seen it? All slabs are designed to crack to a degree. Called shrinkage cracking. My slab engineering says no tiles to be laid for 6 months. I will say though that I doubt it will crack "badly" or outside tolerance. Why not try and do a finish that will embrace the feature if you're really worried and want it. But as noted in the previous post, it can be done at a cost... A cost I would think you can afford if doing polished concrete. Re: Polish concrete in a waffle pot slab 6Feb 01, 2015 11:07 am I'm glad StructuralBIMGuy replied to you. We have waffle pod and have polished concrete with no cracking after 18 months down. However there are around 40 screw in piers up to 8 metres deep under the slab and a lot of extra reinforcing. This had nothing to do with the finish we wanted, it was a council requirement for where we built, but it would help stabilize the slab. So I don't think there is a simple answer to your question, other factors would come into play. You said you spoke to the concreter, is he laying the slab or is it someone you were talking to about doing the finish? If the person laying the slab already has expectations of cracking it doesn't sound promising. If you really have your heart set on polished concrete I think you would have to ask the builder what extra cost would be involved to upgrade the slab. Our builder mothered our slab right through the build to make sure we got a good finish. Even protecting the slab as different trades come through costs them time, so we found some builders weren't keen to do it. If all else fails you might like to look at a "trowel down" finish that is applied later. Re: Polish concrete in a waffle pot slab 7Feb 11, 2015 11:32 pm 32 mpa, cure it with plastic and deal with cracks when/if they show up. Don't do the topping, make the slab 10mm thicker for the grind. The polishing person should liaise with the concreter. So they both have responsibilities to be aware of. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Polish concrete in a waffle pot slab 8Feb 12, 2015 7:42 am Topping pours are used for specific finishes and are expensive..its horses for courses recommended applications 1 Expensive agregates ie coloured quartz (with gold flex) 2 Base separation layer is required floating finshes 3 Floor Infill work and artwork 4 cast in metal strips can control cracking and different material separation use. I don't like putting metal strips in because you get a crack on each side of the strip that fills with crap and then the hot day comes along and expands the whole floor and well something has to give.
