Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jan 19, 2015 5:48 pm Hi all, I am building a new home and it is approximately $900-1000 to upgrade from a grey concrete driveway to exposed aggregate (I only have a 43m2 driveway - $88m2 for coloured concrete, $110m2 for exposed aggregate). I have searched the Web and this forum but havent found much of any help. Is exposed aggregate worth the extra expense? I am all for lower maintenance, so if exposed aggregate is quite a lot less maintenance, then I might splurge. Any help/ideas appreciated Thanks, Dale Dale - Building Newbie Proserpine, QLD Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 3Jan 19, 2015 6:32 pm Thanks mate, yeah I thought price was on par with market price. I believe driveway is minimum 100mm thick, but will double check - and check prep as well. Just after other's opinions on exposed agg and whether its worth the cost over coloured concrete Dale - Building Newbie Proserpine, QLD Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 5Jan 19, 2015 7:20 pm From what I have read, exposed agg appears to have better longevity and less maintenance, so if that is the case I will strongly consider it. If theres not much difference other than personal preference or aesthetics, then maybe not so Dale - Building Newbie Proserpine, QLD Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 7Mar 04, 2015 9:02 am remember you will have maintenance to do on the exposed aggregate..ie re seal a couple of times over 6 years at a cost around $7-10 sq mtr(or diy). If the drive is flat I'd be more inclined to standard concrete(25mpa) with a hint of colour in the hue best match/contrasting your house then rough grind and siloxane treat for stain barrier. If you want something a bit different.. Easier clean for flat driveways and less need for an aggressive surface. The rough grind should remove the slurry layer of cement on the top of the concrete and expose the stones for a bit of colour texture. It's a rough grind around 20 grit and does impart some slip resistance. The siloxane treatment should last 8-10 years as it is a penetrating sealer so not subject to surface abrasion. Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 8Jun 08, 2015 4:57 pm The exposed aggregate footpaths across Dry Creek on Mawson Lakes Boulevarde' Mawson Lakes SA was done professionally about 8 years ago and looks yuck/dirty/grungy now. And that's dark grey tones, not pale/creamy. Helped me make up my mind to go plain coloured concrete. Low maintenance is always my first choice Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 9Jun 08, 2015 5:36 pm If I had young children I would be worried about the surface of exposed aggregate due to the possibility of making falls worse than simple grazes. Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 11Jun 15, 2015 6:44 pm With agg, it all depends on how exposed the agg is. We haven't had anything but a scraped knee to deal with so far with the munchkins and that could happen anywhere. But for that reason we went for a medium finish, not too rough (ie less exposed rather than more). Our is on the verandah. Of course a driveway gets a lot more use. The sealant is not that easy to apply properly and evenly. But I love the look and think it's well worth a bit of maintenance every so often to keep it looking good (same with a wooden deck really.) Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 12Jun 18, 2015 11:07 pm get honed aggregate!! Never exposed. Maintenance = FOREVER IMPOSSIBLE! Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 14Jun 19, 2015 7:39 pm Honed means that the top is ground off so the agg becomes smoother. We did only a medium exposure which I think almost equates to the same thing? Re: Exposed aggregate vs grey concrete driveway 16Jun 19, 2015 10:23 pm Ours isn't. I think it still has to comply with non slip regulations. It's also a coarser mix than interior concrete flooring.
