Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Aug 21, 2014 11:54 pm Hello all, Just wondering what the minimum thickness for a driveway is in Victoria. I've looked around a bit and I've seen 100mm in most places I've looked, just want to get some more clarity. Current driveway is around 45-75mm thick. (45mm minimum to 75mm maximum in varying places) Kind regards, tecstar Re: Minimum thickness requirements 2Aug 22, 2014 12:52 am I am not involved with this particular industry but I have an outside interest after hearing many stories of poor workmanship, a lack of regulatory knowledge and numerous unlicensed operators. It is clearly an industry in need of a major overhaul. For what it's worth, my understanding is that driveways fall under AS3727 (residential paving). My further understanding is that a driveway must be a minimum 100 mm thick for vehicles less than 3t. The driveway also requires reinforcement and bar chairs must be used. You need someone who has access to the AS to confirm the above. A Google search may help. EDIT: A very late edit. Australian Standards are produced by Standards Australia, a private company. Australian Standards only have legality if they have been legislated or are written into a contract. As far as I am aware, AS 3727 has never been legislated nor is referenced in the NCC and is a Guide only. There may be other Australian Standards applicable to this thread's subject matter that have been legislated or referenced in the NCC but finding out whether an Australian Standard has been legislated can be very difficult. 3in1 Supadiverta. Even the production of sunglasses Australian standards are developed to set out minimum requirements that must be adhered to to prevent foreseeable or avoidable issues from occurring. Australian standards need to be adhered to to prevent being found non compliant or negligent should something fail to meet its expected purpose. Knowing what is required under a specific standard helps you stay informed of what to expect. That said, there are *some* standards that could do with updating. Re: Minimum thickness requirements 6Dec 03, 2015 6:03 pm I'm currently in a battle with my builder as the edges of our driveway are 75mm thick, even though the contract says 100mm. I've had the regional manager out and even he is saying it is within the standards and that they won't re-pour it (they keep saying that if there are any issues later on they will fix it). The rest of the driveway is 100mm+ thick, but towards the start of the future crossover it gets down to 75mm thick. I can't find the relevant information on what the standards say, is anyone able to help me out here and post up the relevant standards/codes? Any help would be appreciated Re: Minimum thickness requirements 8Dec 03, 2015 8:44 pm Stewie D That's just laziness on the part of the concretor to fail to excavate to the full depth and the builder is covering for him. Stewie Yup my thoughts exactly. I'm just struggling to get the builder to fix it. They spoke to the concreter who is saying that in the middle it is 100mm thick and it is just some excess stones around the outside that make it 75mm thick, but I call BS on that. At the moment I feel like my only way to win this battle is to find a standard that I can point to. Our contract says 100mm paving, but they are saying that they won't re-do it as it is within standard. The standard is what's written in the contract so it should be 100mm. There is no requirement to build anything to an Australian Standard unless the contract, or specification says that an Australian Standard applies. see (http://anewhouse.com.au/2013/11/australian-standards/) The Victorian guide to standards and tolerances (http://www.vba.vic.gov.au/__data/assets ... s-2015.pdf) says +/- 5mm The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Minimum thickness requirements 13Jan 03, 2016 8:04 pm Great contribution from all posters but the bottom line is that the driveway does not comply with AS 2737 , does not conform with the contract and is outside reasonable tolerances. Clause 8.1 (b) states the words 'typical' and 'should' not 'all installations' and 'must'. But then the table uses the word minimum. Whilst previously I've been able to argue that the wording in a table should over ride all else (commercial client) I doubt you will win the case against the hia.
