Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jul 16, 2014 12:01 pm Hi all, I am about to start building and we have just had a variation to our final plans. We purchased a package which included concrete paving to the alfresco area. The drafting team have now said that due to the site survey they want to make the alfresco integrated into the house slab. This will be at no extra cost to us. I really don't know much about this - I am assuming the concrete paving is similar to like a footpath and would be at a low level, and obviously I can imagine what it being part of the slab would look like. They said it will be better for stability of the slab to have it integrated. Any opinions on this? I don't really know enough about it to feel confident in signing off on it? Thanks My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70636&p=1161767#p1161767 Re: Conrete Paving vs Integrated into slab - Alfreco PLEASE 2Jul 16, 2014 1:58 pm It sounds good me but I would then question why put pavers on a slab? It might be better to then get tiles instead of pavers on the slab. Re: Conrete Paving vs Integrated into slab - Alfreco PLEASE 3Jul 16, 2014 2:40 pm Concrete paving I would assume is just what it says... paving... paving is blocks usually laid directly onto a sand or limestone base. An integrated concrete slab would mean that your alfresco and your house would be one big concrete slab, poured at the same time, although they should still step down the alfresco area so that it is lower than the house area. I know what they are I am just not sure whether I should sign off on it. Does it have implications in terms of can you deck over it (is there suitable drainage?) or pave over it? My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70636&p=1161767#p1161767 Re: Conrete Paving vs Integrated into slab - Alfreco PLEASE 5Jul 20, 2014 6:21 am Sounds perfect to me. I would not even consider an alfresco that was not part of the slab. Perfect base for putting tiles on and allowing you to walk out your alfresco door seamlessly. Whoever will do your decking should give you advice about slab base versus non slab. Decking looks nice when new and perfectly maintained. But I won't even consider it because maintenance is huge ... You have to treat it yearly. Re: Conrete Paving vs Integrated into slab - Alfreco PLEASE 6Jul 20, 2014 8:01 am structurally better to have in monolithic (all one slab). also better termite barrier as if they were separate slabs there may be opportunity for termites to enter through the expansion joint between house slab and alfresco 2 2523 Thanks for your advice. So far i have not noticed any issues with doors and windows. Builder advised they will organise drainers to inspect 2 weeks ago but no further… 7 18787 I use Tramex moisture meter and it will tell me instantly if the wall is cement sheet or plaster or masonite but most people dont have the equipment. 5 7085 |
