Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 May 07, 2014 12:00 am Hi all, We're still tossing up between a deck and travertine/stone for our patio (9m x 6m). One of the larger chains advised me that the 30mm travertine could be installed without a slab first, providing the ground under was preped with compacted gravel and sand. Saving 3.5k on a slab sounds appealing. Has anyone done this or had experience in doing so? What was the result like? Re: Travertine without slab 2May 07, 2014 12:18 am Why does a slab cost so much for 45sqm. That is almost what it would cost to have it done in reinforced exposed aggregate. I think reo plain concrete should be around/ 55 sqm. These are Perth prices and I honestly cannot believe anywhere would be more expensive. It was me I would have the tiles laid on a slab. The 30mm travertine would be pavers and would bring all the probs that pavers usually bring. Of course it will come down to cost at the end of the day. I suspect that pavers will be cheaper than laid travertine tiles which I think would be cheaper than a deck. I am going with stone on a slab. Ciao Mark Re: Travertine without slab 3May 07, 2014 12:33 am Hi mark, The slab quoted was f27 reinforced 25mpa, which is what I was told was the way to go for travertine pavers on top. I guess if we use the 12mm rather than 30mm reinforcing mightn't be needed? Slab is probably best I guess... Re: Travertine without slab 4May 07, 2014 12:50 am My alfresco is under the main roof with a cedar lined ceiling so I wanted a certain look. I will be continuing the stone from inside through the alfresco. My concern is weeds etc growing in between the pavers. I am not sure what f27....etc is, I thought the same spec as a driveway would be sufficient which is what I gave prices for. I think if you research you may be able to get a concreter to do the job at a reasonable price. For travertine supplied and installed in perth you can get decent quality for around 130/ sqm. Have a hunt around and you may be able to ask the travertine supplier for a concreter as well. Certainly for one of their preferred layers. good luck and post pics when you have it done. ciao get them to replace the chipped tiles. It will stick out like a sore thumb overwise.
