Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Sep 13, 2013 5:19 pm Hi All, new here and just bought a house in need of fixing at the rear of the house running from the patio to the workshop is a clearly defined pathway with proper cemented brick edge - (looks like a pro job). the "body" of the pathway however is pretty much a dogs dinner (weeds, all sorts of materials mixed from broken brick to crushed granite to simple ole dirt) what i plan to do is 1) dig down about 200mm in the body of the path 2) spray the surface with roundup 3) run a compactor up and down 4) place crushed limestome in the prepared area and compact it level anybody see any future issue with that? Re: crushed limestone pathway questions 2Sep 13, 2013 6:01 pm Seems OK but for the Roundup (it only really works on green growing plants) Something like 'Path Clear' would be better. I would probably lay weed mat before putting the crushed limestone in The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: crushed limestone pathway questions 3Sep 14, 2013 5:26 pm Don't bother with weedkiller underneath. No plant will germinate through 200mm of compacted crushed limestone, I can guarantee that. Weedmat is a waste of time too. Sounds like you have a containment border around the path, is it on all sides? If so, great, otherwise your path will just fret away from the edges. The problem with weed infiltration will be from the top. As with any non stabilised (no cement) paving or ground covering 'solution', and I mean this loosely as it is not really a solution at all, is the material will fret away at the edges or top from traffic and weeds will take hold from seed blown /washed in. See it all the time with gravel verges, bluemetal paths, crushed limestone paths, loose stone coverings. So called "low maintenance" ideas are the exact opposite - the highest maintenance of all solutions. The only thing which will keep your path nice is regular weeding, cleaning off any foreign contamination which blows in and regular watering and re-compacting. I would add cement and make it a poured limestone path instead, especially as you have your edge containment already set up (brick border). BTW whatever your decide make sure you have fall across it for drainage as sitting water will accelerate damage. A person needs to be licensed to offer financial advice.
