Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jun 28, 2013 1:32 pm Hi all The people we bought this house off had the brilliant thought to do a quick paint job to the concrete driveway (previously mission brown) in the most awful terracotta orange colour. It very quickly started peeling away and so we now have a mostly orange driveway with some black (?undercoat) and mission brown poking through. Eventually we will likely tear down the carport and build a double garage and this driveway will be ripped up, so spending a few thousand to make it pretty would be a waste of money. I'd love to do a quick cheap DIY job ($500ish) to paint it charcoal, but my concern is that the original paint would flake and we would have charcoal with orange spots Any thoughts on how I could DIY strip the orange paint off? (If I can get it back to black undercoat or mission brown then I'm happy to take my chances repainting as flaking paint won't be as noticeable). Would an acid wash help? We are talking 40m2 area of orange concrete which I am so sick of looking at!!!! Also, any recommendations for non slip concrete paint. Our driveway slopes and the current stuff is slippery. Re: Repainting concrete driveway 2Jun 29, 2013 3:59 am HI , Paint will not work at all as your driveway is most likely to be Hydrostatic , this is why ALL paints and topical sealers peel , flake and delaminate .. Use a Concrete colour Stain www.getnewlook.com.au , Smartcolour DIY for under your budget J Re: Repainting concrete driveway 3Aug 12, 2014 9:54 am Just. Quick update a bit over a year on. We hired someone (I think they were called crikeys concrete painters) for $800 to do the lot. One year on of constant driving on it etc it still looks absolutely brilliant. One or two areas with slight peeling (he warned us of that and left the leftover paint for touch ups). Re: Repainting concrete driveway 4Aug 15, 2014 9:10 am Hi Lozza, so you do recommend painting as a cheap alternative? We are looking at concrete resurfacing for our driveway, path that goes around the back of the house and an undercover patio area. Total area is around 130sqm. We've been quoted $6k-$15k for the full resurface however coloured stain quotes are around $1,000-$2,000 Do you have any photos of the finish? I guess for the price difference even if it does peel I could get it re-done every 2 years for the 12 years and it would still be cheaper... Re: Repainting concrete driveway 5Aug 15, 2014 2:25 pm This is it after a year (hopefully link works). Don't have any better shots http://s1353.photobucket.com/user/lozza ... 2.jpg.html In our case we were thinking short term as we were eventually going to build double garage and redo driveway so just wanted something cheap in the interim. I fully expected it to peel (especially as the underlying paint was peeling) and was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. We were also warned it would be slippery on the slope and the guy put some grit in and it was actually less slippery than prior to painting. I'm not sure id do painting as a long term solution, although as you say from a cost perspective it is attractive to just redo as needed. To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9862 Hi all I need a guidance on how far I need to space expansion joints in the concrete driveway and its type (keyway/foam.) Contraction joints are at 3m max for a 125 slab. Thanks 0 10940 |
