Browse Forums Paving & Concreting Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 2May 12, 2013 3:27 pm HI Mike ... Yes Sealers over concrete are good and there any many types all with their own benefits and flaws .. Well since you have used colour thru ( oxide in Mix ) some will say to use a say day sealer which is generally solvent based and topical .. The problem with sealing any concrete or colour tru early is that your trap all the moisture in the concrete as it is trying to Hydrate ( Cure ) this leads to whitning/blushing of the slab and it may peel/delaminate I spend a lot of time in NZ and Australia sorting out issues that arrise with sealing concrete especially after new pours .. My advice is let if hydrate and try not to damage it while it is unsealed especially now its colder .. wait 1 month and then seal .. There are a couple of really good easy to apply sealers out there but bare in mind you will have to maintain that sealer every 1-2 years and if you go for a solvent based one you should remove it everytime .. Advanatge of waterbased penetrating sealers is they are much easier to maintain but you have to look after them .. any questions just ask Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 3May 12, 2013 9:34 pm Thanks Jason. Can you recommend me a particular brand of sealant? With the solvent based sealant, if I need to re-apply again in a couple years time how do I remove it before applying a new coat? With water based sealant, what do I need to do to maintain it? Cheers Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 5May 13, 2013 2:54 pm I was going to recommend something but based on your price point in regards to the link I'll pass. I will say that getjason has raised some points worth considering. Allow the concrete to cure before applying topical coatings as the moisture will do as described. If you don't want that wet look you can do it now by using a penetrating sealer. They breath and allow moisture vapour to expel through the sealer. It should also be noted that you can buy penetrating sealers that darken and enrich the colour. Eliminating A LOT of issues that have been raised in this thread. Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 6May 13, 2013 3:50 pm Mike2012 Hi Mike , had a look at this product which is no different that most Solvent based acrylic sealers Yes they seem cheap but if you divide the coverage by 3 coats it adds up . Also you will need to remove the coating when replacing and common practise is Solvent removal which i do not reccomend nor am i am fan of . This is one reason why i we promote Eco Friendly water based sealers as they are so much easier to maintain so dont just do it on the price point .. Its worth reading the description of Drive product from the link and them read further down under the Moisture section .. One minute they promote as an Acrylic and next they say its solvent based so be careful of mositure .. Just covering their behinds Happy to send you some technical sheets of what my contractors use REgards Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 7May 13, 2013 9:45 pm miteq I was going to recommend something but based on your price point in regards to the link I'll pass. Please recommend me something. I was going for a sealant that has glossy/wet look. I will add anti-slip additives if required especially across the part of the drive that extends in the public footpath. Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 9May 13, 2013 9:55 pm Getjason Yes they seem cheap but if you divide the coverage by 3 coats it adds up . I thought they were reasonably expensive. They are not? What about the quality? Getjason Happy to send you some technical sheets of what my contractors use Please do. Would you also please recommend me your favourite sealant? Is the water based one not as durable as a solvent one? Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 10May 13, 2013 10:03 pm bouquet25 We used Dt Fauxtex sealer, its cement based, colour hardener, stronger than cement and its also slip resistant....just make sure you use correct roller and use in correct temp. Just Googled DT Fauxtex sealer, apparently it can only be applied on fresh concrete. So I can't use this. Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 12May 13, 2013 10:45 pm bouquet25 Didnt you say your concrete is new? This is what we used on our new concrete. Its a solvent based acrilic Yes our concrete is new, but the dt fauxter selaer is applied immediately after the concrete is poured. Re: Recommend Me A Sealant for My New Driveway 13May 13, 2013 10:52 pm Our concrete was laid new and left for couple of weeks and then sealed. We were at the property for 4 years and only had to recoat once,as per instructions from pro, would definitely use again. you need to make an application to your local council for this as they are the approval authority for driveways cheers Simeon 1 7093 To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9862 |
