Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jan 29, 2013 3:14 pm Hi all, we need advice on concrete slab. we have a small area around 2.2m x 0.64 with a very thin concrete slab (by drilling a few holes into it, it looks to be around 30mm only). so we now want to set up a 6foot fish tank on it with a solid 90x45 structural pine stand, but worry if the slab is able to support it. so is there anything we could do to reinforce it to ensure it will support 1 ton of water(2 tanks)? Thanks in advance for any reply. Re: need advice to enforce the existing concrete slab 2Jan 29, 2013 10:03 pm Hi aquanow. Hard to say without a picture. 30mm thick there would not be any reo in the concrete. I assume its an outdoor pathway. It's more about the base prep and I doubt there is much for a thin concrete topping. Is it cracked? Also is the frame made to distribute the load evenly or are there 4 legs? One tonne spread over one and a bit square metres is not a big load if the concrete is not cracked. Sitting on 4 legs though I would say no. You can't reinforce the existing concrete but its only an area of 1.5 sqm so it is not much work to break it up and pour a thick pad to protect your valuable investment in aquarium and fish. Re: need advice to enforce the existing concrete slab 3Jan 30, 2013 9:37 am thanks mike, below is the picture for it. I can't see any cracked, but the slab is not even level, so regardless, I will need to level it first by either fill in more concrete or replace the slab, gut feeling keeps telling myself to fill more only, as the base of the stand should somewhat distribute the load through the 1800x600 - 90x45 pine(can be seen in the pic, that will be the base of the stand). so I just need more opinion from other building expert to assess the situation. and nope, I don't think there is any mesh either by the look of it. The second pic is the hole drilled into it to explore what's under and to see how thick is it. In my case I bought structural LVLs and scraped them back and used them as joists. 1 5434 yep, clearly mark where the infloor heating pipes are before drilling or nailing 1 6274 Building Standards; Getting It Right! is this for a residential dwelling or a shed?
