Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Sep 05, 2012 11:38 am I'm looking for suggestions on how I can go about building 60sqm of driveway on a budget. I've investigated concrete driveway options and have received quotes of 5500 to 7000. Are there any options available which cost a maximum of 3000? I prefer to not spend 6000 now as I have plans to demolish the house and rebuild after 6-7 years time. When its rebuilt we will probably end up reconstructing the driveway anyway. To save money, I am happy to do some or all of the work myself. Re: Budget Driveway Options 4Sep 05, 2012 1:56 pm What about asphalt - it's apparently cheaper than concrete. Seems interesting. Re: Budget Driveway Options 10Mar 08, 2013 5:06 pm If you wanted just standard grey concrete, it shouldn't cost you much more than $3k. Anyone who is trying to quote you more than that is blatantly ripping you off. My partner and I considered concreting my parent's driveway as we are housesitting for them for the next couple of years. (he's a concreter so could have done it cheaply), but it was massive and we weren't prepared to spend so much money on a house that wasn't ours. We decided to go the recycled bitumen route and this is what it ended up costing: Rubbish removal and sand prep: $1,500 Recycled bitumen lay: $800 Then we had to hire a compactor AND it took HOURS to compact it to a level we were happy with. All up, we ended up spending almost $3k anyway on getting it all done. Mind you, we had a lot of rubbish at the front so removing that was the most costly part of it. The only issue I have with it is that less than 3 months later, it has already started to come loose - it's also really hard to walk on without shoes (hurts your feet) so no good when I want to make a quick "ahhh the bin man is coming" run. Coming back to your old stomping grounds, huh? Renovations on a budget can be quite the journey. It's like giving your house a new lease on life.
