Efflorescence?? Little help please gurus.

Went around to a house the other day as a favour.

He is having this problem where eff. is appearing on the fiberglass walls of his pool. Upon inspection I wasn't sure if it was in fact eff or not. Seemed to flake away and wasn't a powder type substance. I know I am being vague but as mentioned doing this as a last resort type of thing.

Attached are some photo's of the affected area (top two) as well as a short video. Anyone shed any light at all?

Cheers,

Jarrod

I'm no guru, but I'll ask the first thing that came into my mind.
Is it a saltwater pool?
Yes it's a salt water pool.
At a guess then I'd say it is the saltwater collecting up around the unerside of the pool copping when the pool is being used and then as it slowly drains away and evaporates it leaves the salt behind.
In the first picture you can see there is a little lip that water could collect in.
It may even be drawing some salts from the mortar bed under the copping out as well.
Does it just wash of with water?
Looks like calcium buildup. Take a water sample to the pool shop and have it tested. They will have the chemical and the answers to fix it I'm sure.
almost bet it is an additive in the mortar used for coping, ie : bond crete, lanotec, weld crete etc

when the coping is installed there is excess mortar which comes out from under the coper, this is generally wiped off but a film of additive can be left on fibreglass. this can re-emulsify and or cause salt to build up on the left over film.

if it was Eff. then the copers would be covered in it to.

carfully use a stanly knife blade to scrape away or use a petrol pressure cleaner and then in both instaces use turps to clean of residue film.

General Discussion

Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀
