Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Nov 09, 2011 9:09 pm Hi guys, Ok so doing your regular bathroom reno and I have come across a problem with the slab in there. Seems most of the slab is barely more than an inch/inch and half across the floor. It is the original location of the bathroom, no wall changes have occurred (I have the original plans) Its a 1970's house. Now I can't work out if it was there from original or done as part of a reno done some time before I bought the house about 5 years ago. I've started to see about getting a structural/building engineer in to have a look and give guidence. But I thought I would hit some forums and see if any others have had this issue and did they just end up finding it localized to a single room and pulled the floor and redid the slab correctly. Could really do with some thoughts. At this point in time I am looking to hit the floor some more in the next couple of days, open it up a bit more and also try and see how far in the house this goes. Pictures attached, you can see the hole, you can also see there are some bricks in the soil under the slab. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/507/p1000417u.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/209/p1000415.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/339/p1000418h.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/714/p1000421w.jpg/ I'm a bit lost for why someone would even do this. Re: Potential Slad issue found in bathroom during reno 2Nov 10, 2011 3:29 pm I think its quite common with older houses the bathroom was never concreted as part of the main slab, and just ends up with a thin layer of concrete when the time came for tiling? Atleast thats what ive found with several older houses ive owned in Perth. Re: Potential Slad issue found in bathroom during reno 3Nov 10, 2011 5:42 pm Hi pezz, Thanks for the reply. Did you end up doind a new slab and tie in to the main slab if that was the case? Also did you find it was just localised to the bathroom or sometimes creeped out into toilet if it was the next room? Re: Potential Slad issue found in bathroom during reno 4Nov 10, 2011 8:46 pm Yeah, Ive seen it extended to toilet/laundry areas aswell. Provided the existing concrete is solid, I have just filled any holes with concrete and then laid a new sand/cement screed on top of that for tiling. If its been fairly solid for 30 odd years then I cant see any reason to remove and put new with tie in etc If your relocating shower/bath etc.. to different positions in the room then things might be different as you will probably have to cut the existing concrete a fair bit to relocate pipework and then its probably easier to just start again with the slab. Cheers Pezz.. Re: Potential Slad issue found in bathroom during reno 5Nov 11, 2011 8:03 am Hey, Many thanks will do more investigations. Yes bath coming our and full shower going in plus wall mount vanity etc so plumbing changes so looking at pulling the crap floor and get a new slab put in. All 3 items listed are defects and are of concern.
