Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Aug 19, 2011 7:45 am This is where it gets really confusing. All concretors told me that they will use "roadbase". Then it turned out that some of them actually meant crusher dust, some use "sand" (without wanting to be more specific about the sand, but possibly the same as crusher dust), some say will use "Roadbase 8mm", some "DBG Roadbase". What is the best material to use under a driveway on a clay site? What was used for your dwy? BTW, when chatting to an engineer long ago on an unrelated matter, he warned me against crusher dust and sand for driveways (because crusher dust has particles too fine and can't be compacted, sand 'helps' create pot holes in roads - according to him). He said that roadbase is the best. But almost no concretor wants to use it even after insisting. Oh, and was your sub-base compacted in any way prior to putting the reo in?? Re: What did your concretor use for sub-base & did he compac 2Aug 19, 2011 8:55 am I visited my structural engineer yesterday and he mentioned that river sand (compacted by wetting) or slag dust. Anything without a clay content. Suggested not using gravl since it is a bit harsh on the vapour barrier (plastic sheet). In my case its for a slab on ground and the the sand etc are to help with drainage. for my exisitng slab where drainage was less of a concern there was no base. that is, the plastic went straight onto dirt. Also, under my drivway it was just dirt and no vapour barrier. When you say that under your drivway it was just dirt (and no vapour barrier), by dirt do you mean soil/clay/natural soil on your site or some "underlay" that I asked about in first post (roadbase/sand/xxx)?
