Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Aug 14, 2011 11:18 am Hi all, We are first time builders & our slab was poured last Monday and we went up to have a squizz yesterday & saw this... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The pipe is for our kitchen sink. Obviously there is a hole with no concrete & the poly styrene is visible as is the rio steel. Is this a major issue??? Our SS isn't very approachable, so much so, we still haven't even been told by him the slab has been laid. What are your thoughts? Should we ask for it to be fixed and withhold payment for this stage until it is fixed? TIA Building the Milano30 Site start: 30th June 2011 PCI: 1st December 2011 Handover: As soon as the bank pays! I'm not an expert, but if it was me this is what I would do. I would check the rest of the slab. Even tap in areas of interest and if the sink area was the only problem just let the builder fix it. If it is widespread I would ask for an engineer's report stating that the slab is satisfactory. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Slab poured - is this an issue? 3Aug 14, 2011 12:47 pm Its a polystyrene block-out around the pipe. It is probably so a fitting can be fitted over, the pipe shifted slightly if needed, access in case it is damaged. Ask the plumber? Re: Slab poured - is this an issue? 4Aug 14, 2011 1:18 pm If it's a ground floor slab, I don't think it will be an issue Re: Slab poured - is this an issue? 5Aug 14, 2011 1:26 pm looks suss to me, need a better photo. a piece of waffle pod may have been broken off and floated to the surface, if so, odd that it wasnt fixed on pour day. It could be a termite issue if the pipe and chosen termite protection, "termimesh" Kordon" whatever, isnt fully encased in concrete. Never actually seen anything like that before. Re: Slab poured - is this an issue? 6Aug 15, 2011 5:17 pm Yep I never thought of termites, but surely you could shove some of that orange termite d.p.m down there and patch it up? It's not like there's a lot for the little fella's to eat there is there ? Lol Re: Slab poured - is this an issue? 7Aug 15, 2011 9:32 pm The polystyrene is waffle pods. Very common nowdays. See here http://www.slabworks.com.au/Waffle_Pods.php and here http://www.wafflepod.com/engineer/index.php and here http://www.wafflepodpeople.com.au/ for more info As previous posters have said if you are using physical termite protection barriers like Kordon the this will be an issue as the Kordon must form a seal. Re: Slab poured - is this an issue? 8Aug 16, 2011 7:34 am Thank you all for your thoughts & opinions. We got hold of our SS & he 'explained' that it was 'normal' just in case they need to move the pipe. We rang 2 independent inspectors as well & they said it was 'probable' ... we decided not to get an inspection of slab, but the inspector we will get for the frame/lock up/ handover inspections will check out this area during the frame stage. We will definitely be keeping a close eye on it to make sure... TBH I'm not sure what kind of termite protection is used. Australian standards must be adhered to and I'm sure the bank would want them too. Hello needing some advice. I was about to build my Alfresco and needed a new slab and remove exisiting slab as its not standard. So they start to excavate and jackhammer… 0 10641 thanks Chippy, i hope they have applied sealer but i am doubt to be honest, so i am gonna do this job after handover. 8 16176 |
