Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jul 16, 2011 9:24 pm We'll be having some custom cut pavers later on for a few "special" corners ... We'd like to install these several pavers ourselves, but they would need to be shortened on 1 side (simple straight cut). Does anyone know where / who in Syd provides this service? Re: Where to cut pavers to size (Sydney)?? 2Jul 19, 2011 11:15 am Hi Lex, I'm not sure where in Sydney you are located, but I'm pretty sure that we had our pavers cut to size at our local Amber store. I can't remember how much it was but I do remember it was a set price per cut. Hope that helps 2fk Re: Where to cut pavers to size (Sydney)?? 3Jul 19, 2011 1:27 pm Thanks, 2fk, great!! ... I will inquire at our Amber store ... may even buy the pavers from them. Actually, this made me think - I wonder if they only cut if you buy from them? I wouldn't pay anymore than $1 per cut for bulk (over 50). Less than 20 expect to pay maybe $2 per cut. Beer also works Best bet is to drive to a new development and find a bricklayer or paver. Re: Where to cut pavers to size (Sydney)?? 7Jul 20, 2011 9:09 pm Great! Rang Amber and they do it for $5 a paver, and you don't have to buy from them But, they cut the long pavers from 2 sides, meaning that there could be a messy join of the 2 cuts in the middle Is it normal to have to cut long sides (eg. 60cm) from both ways, towards the middle?? Re: Cutting pavers to size 9Jul 21, 2011 12:10 pm Lex at that price you could buy a saw and cut-off blade and do it yourself...then you'd have the saw to do other stuff!!! Think I'll join Nemisis and take the saw for a drive!! LOL Re: Cutting pavers to size 10Jul 21, 2011 12:10 pm The pavers are 600 by 400 and 40 mm thick. The cut would be along the long side (600mm), so that the pavers become something like 600 x 300. Yeah, I can get you some "great" deals over here! The prices I get are always at least double of what other people are talking about My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Now I'm following you. There will be no way to avoid this as the paver is probably quite large in length (600mm I'm guessing) and won't be able to be pushed into the saw after a certain length. There will be no problem cosmetically with this, just mark out with pencil a nice straight line for the cutter. Re: Cutting pavers to size 14Jul 21, 2011 4:30 pm Ok I see that you have 3 options... Option 1. If you only have 10 cuts, and it's 5 bucks a cut then it's going to cost you $50 through Amber. Option 2. Hire a brick saw from Kennards (or similar) which will set you back at least $80 and that's not including the mistakes you're going to make on the pavers plus your time/effort lugging the equipment back to your house. Option 3. Find a building site with brickies, offer them a case of beer to do your cuts. Cost of case of VB is around $55 which doesn't take in to account the time/effort you put into finding the building site. In short, go to Amber! 2fk Re: Cutting pavers to size 15Jul 21, 2011 4:39 pm Yep, I agree It's not the cost anyway, but the thought of having a "proper" saw and the opportunities for its other useful jobs I am, however, a bit concerned about the 2 cuts meeting in the same line Looks like they use some small saw?? Would the brickies' saw be able to do a "one-liner" cut (I mean start and go to the end, no need to turn the paver around) ?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Cutting pavers to size 16Aug 05, 2011 8:46 pm A small update for you all Had a look at some pavers (at another place) that would also need shortening. The price per cut is $5 !!! And it doesn't even matter how long the cut is - from 35cm to 1 m - all the same price My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Cutting pavers to size 18Aug 07, 2011 1:22 pm If you are installing the pavers yourself anyway, go the whole hog and get the appropriate tools for the job... I had to cut several pavers to facilitate a curve and did so successfully just by using a cutting disc on an angle grinder, doing it freeform by hand, to half the paver depth (20mm) on the top side. Striking the 'waste' portion with a mallet was then all that was requirerd to break it clean. The pavers are buried anyway so the cut finish on the edge is never seen. So you cut them to about half of the depth, but did the whole curve And then just kick off the bottoms? (well, now it sounds funny ) My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Cutting pavers to size 20Aug 07, 2011 4:09 pm (That's alright, we're all funny here ) All my cuts were actually straight but each paver was cut on a different angle, so from a distance it looks like a continuous curve. I brought a 5" grinder home from work but bought my own masonry discs, I can't remember what they cost but I went through quite a few. You will know when you've cut deep enough by how easy the waste bit breaks away. Geoff - Decophile. Appreciate that Chippy.
