Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jul 21, 2011 6:55 pm Hi All,
Just a quick question to those who have sealed their coloured driveways themselves.. how much did it cost? My concreter hasn't gotten back to me now that he has my money and honestly didn't write it on the quote he gave me.. so I guess I have to do it myself... Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 2Jul 21, 2011 8:45 pm Hi, A 20ltr drum will cost $150? & you can get them from any concreter suppliers. We've done ours in the past, I'd suggest you also buy a sealer broom, we initially just used a supermarket special but it ended up just being a gluggy mess. Got a life, just can't find it! Thanks for your help, Just be warned about these cheaper sealers. At that sort of cost you will be re-sealing every year for the rest of your life. The reason for this is due to whats called volume solids. That is, the less volume solids it has the "weaker" the coating is and the quicker it will break down. The rest of the can is made up of solvent which evaporates. Why pay for more solvent? The more volume solids it has the stronger it is and will increase life expectancy. We have around 22% as a guide, and yes you pay a bit more for quality. Almost double the price but the life span on these are around 5 years. IT's worth the extra, beleive me. Most of these types of sealers are still cheap, but $120...i'd stay away. Also consider the amount you have to do. If you have round 100sqm you will more than likley need 40ltrs if it's concrete base. Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 5Aug 01, 2011 10:47 am hey Victoria_g06, i got told by my concreter to buy sealer from bunnings and diy. apparently there's no magic to it, that's why he doesn't want to come on a different day to do it. He said it costs 120 so the one you've found sounds about right. Sealer - $155 Solvent for first coat - $76 Hydrocholric acid to wash driveway before hand -$12 Broom for Hydrochloric acid $15 Roller for sealer $30 Roughly $300! I think that was it.. but I am going to wait until it is warmer to do it so it will dry a bit faster. Ummmm, just another question, do you know whether there is a special timeframe within which you have to apply the sealer? and yes please update when you are done, maybe with some pictures thank you Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 9Aug 02, 2011 2:18 pm bobbie Victoria_g06 bobbie hey Victoria_g06, i got told by my concreter to buy sealer from bunnings and diy. apparently there's no magic to it, that's why he doesn't want to come on a different day to do it. And yes, I will post photos Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 10Dec 30, 2011 6:14 pm ok everyone, I have just started to do my driveway sealing since there will be 5 days with no rain and 4 days off! Please don't take my words as gospel, I am just learning as I go. Today - Acid washing concrete. This concrete has never been sealed so if yours has there is an extra step that I won't be talking about You need a stiff bristle broom like below Some supplies, Our driveway is roughly 50 sq m and we have had to go buy some more hydrochloric acid, This yellow container is already mixed 1 part acid to 10 parts water. Simple. After scrubbing the acid into the concrete it is advised to use bicarb soda to neutralise the acid. Below bottom of the picture has already been acid washed so has bottom left. When it is wet is sort of looks like a copper charcoal (Not showing in the photo), but I find it dries the same colour as it started. Steps so far Wash concrete with water to take dirt off Wet concrete and add acid scrubbing as you go. Add bi carb Wash off We are doing one section at a time and it is working well so far. We have had to use more acid than we thought as it doesn't go very far and we have found patches that dont look coppery. Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 12Dec 31, 2011 8:52 am Hi, I'm also very interested to see how the end result goes, I am going to have colored concrete as well on my drive and the verandahs around my house, it will be a big job What happens if you don't seal the concrete? Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 13Dec 31, 2011 10:16 am excited Hi, I'm also very interested to see how the end result goes, I am going to have colored concrete as well on my drive and the verandahs around my house, it will be a big job What happens if you don't seal the concrete? Oh yes it is a big job.. We have gone through 25 litres of acid and it looks ok, not crash hot.. Will post a pic later Our concrete got poured in early June dark charcoal , now it has turned a light grey almost light blue hue. Not sure what would happen if I didn't seal it.. The concreter didn't explain anything! Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 14Dec 31, 2011 8:03 pm Well the actual sealing was easier than I expected. Supplies After acid wash ready for sealer. After Sealer You can tell there is a big difference -darker; still a bit patchy but the final coat should do the trick. For the sealer I used a roller - 5cm Nap (Smallest there is) This first coat has to be 20% solvent to a rate of 7 meters sq per litre. I thought the area was 50 sq m which would have meant 5 litres sealer - 2 litres solvent but we ended up using 1.25 litres solvent and 3.25 litres sealer Next coat is tomorrow night pure sealer. Then technically you have to wait 72 hours before driving but I will have to leave the garage for work Monday - around 36 hours. Mondays good weather should help it along though Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 15Jan 01, 2012 4:10 pm That looks so good, the sealer has really brought out the color in it, I have just been told that without the sealer every bit of dirt and fluid will soak into and stain the concrete. Re: Cost of Sealing Coloured Diveway 16Jan 01, 2012 6:26 pm Ok all done I can say that I'm 95% happy with it.. there are a few parts that are lighter than the rest but generally it is cohesive. Things I would do differently.. I think acid washing is the most important part. If we sealed this earlier it probably would have been easier because it has only gotten lighter. When acid washing try and get it even all over.. the 1st coat of sealer helps but you can tell the much lighter parts. Hopefully this was helpful to someone, and I can say that I've done this myself and not had a tradie stuff it up! Re: How to seal your coloured driveway Step by Step 17Mar 22, 2019 3:55 pm Would anyone know why my driveway has come up with white marks on some sections? My driveway is about 6 months old & has been sealed by our builder. Just curious if anyone has seen this before? Also are cracks like that normal? Thanks!
