Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jul 21, 2011 4:12 pm Hi All, I have a 12 square metre brick garage with a concrete floor. The floor is quite rough with a little exposed reo bar (some rusting) and some divits up to 20mm deep. The surface also has some oil staining. It also could do with some leveling. The garage is no longer used for the car, it is more my 'Man Shed' and I'd like to make it a little more civilised. I read in a previous post that topping under 50mm is not possible. Can anyone give me some suggestions on refinishing this concrete. I have around a $100-150 a square meter for a budget. In case it makes a difference, the area will have some salt water runoff from my wet surfing equipment so with this in mind I would also like a non-slip finish. Appreciate any thoughts. Re: Refinishing 50 year old rough concrete 3Jul 22, 2011 12:23 pm Rather than use concrete you can use a floor screed compound. These can be laid much thinner than concrete. For covering a whole floor I would suggest 20mm minimum. There are a range of compounds from cement based to polymer products. If there is going to be a lot of salt water around it will need to be sealed if you pick a cement based product. The key is to make sure you do the manufacturers surface preparation properly and get good adhesion with the existing concrete. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! There is also just one section that's sunk a bit (maybe 50mm?). Is there one product I could use for both issues? Use a wire brush to remove any loose flakey rust, slight surface rust will be fine as cement in screed will be alkaline enough to stop further rust The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Refinishing 50 year old rough concrete 7Jul 23, 2011 9:01 am Oh, OK. I was thinking that, once the rusting starts, it might "travel" along the reo for a bit longer than it's currently exposed, so thought that they would need to break off more concrete to cut it off / clean it off ... in a word, a bigger surgery My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Refinishing 50 year old rough concrete 8Jul 26, 2011 10:42 am Graham, is it the extra 50mm of height you are concerned about? I think even for a small area $100-150 per m2 will cover the cost of the extra topping and then you can seal it later to avoid this again. The way I see it is, topping it will: A fix the divots B level the area C allow you to have an oil free surface that can be sealed to resist oil, petrol, salt D allow you to get a non slip finish E be cost effective within your budget Only downside would be you will lose 50-70mm of height. IMO not a bad price to pay or un bearable. What about you? Re: Refinishing 50 year old rough concrete 9Jul 27, 2011 10:14 pm Thanks for the feedback. I did wonder about the rusted reo, so that is sorted, Thanks chrisandkate, I forget the previous post I read, I was under the impression that topping would need to be greater than 50mm thick. After a second look I think I could accomodate 50-70mm so it looks like I have the option of screed or concrete. I will do some more research myself however, is it safe to assume that concrete is at least as strong and probably stronger than screed?
