Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jun 16, 2011 10:11 pm HI All, Well I'm almost finished my project, only the paving to do. I have put down a concrete base to put my sand stone pavers on. I was planning to mortar down the pavers without leaving a gap between the pavers and then finish by sweeping sand into any gaps. Will I have any problems with doing this or would I be better to leave a gap between the pavers and grout them? Any advice is welcome. Thanks Luke Re: Laying sandstone pavers over concrete 2Jun 17, 2011 7:33 pm It depends on the finish of the paver...or tile. If you are planning on using a natural finished paver the discrepencies between thicknesses of each paver becomes more evident the closer the gap is, and if you then plan on having anymore than about a 2/3mm gap to disguise the discrepency then sand is not really going to stay put over the long term. Re: Laying sandstone pavers over concrete 3Jun 21, 2011 10:23 pm Grouting the pavers would be the better option, and the strongest. When sand is swept into the gaps and it retains a bit of moisture, it can lead to a band of discolouration around the perimeter of the pavers, particularly sandstone which is quite porous.
