Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jun 01, 2011 11:42 am What are people's opinions or experiences in having concrete piers drilled and poured into clay soil that's been seriously soaked wet? Will we have any issues once the clay shrinks again? My thinking is that the clay is now so swallen that it will be some time until it dries a bit. But once it really dries, it will come away from the piers - meaning that the piers can tilt much easier?? What do you think?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Concrete piers in WET clay 3Jun 01, 2011 12:21 pm I have no idea how wet it is where the bottom of the piers should be (about 1m??). Is that what you meant? I know it's soaked wet some 40cm deep (didn't try any deeper). My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Concrete piers in WET clay 4Jun 01, 2011 12:33 pm The piers are there to take vertical load, tilting shouldn't be a major concern. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Concrete piers in WET clay 8Jun 01, 2011 10:18 pm The piers need to be inspected before pouring to ensure they are deep enough and into solid ground as part of the permit process, hopefully this was the case Planned Landscape Constructions http://www.plannedlandscape.com.au Find us on facebook http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id= ... 9907611509 Re: Concrete piers in WET clay 12Jun 03, 2011 12:30 pm If these piers are to but a slab on or bearers and joists you need the certifier to sign off on them. I sometimes rammed the earth at the bottom of the hole I doubt it did anything of value. But looked better to the certifier. Having water in the holes no problem with in reason. In that if the holes are stable and deep enough not an issue the concrete forces water to the surface. But a massive fan of a vibrator. Always make sure they are on the deeper side of whats required. Good Luck Pulpo Re: Concrete piers in WET clay 13Jun 03, 2011 3:06 pm Thanks so much Pulpo These piers will support a patio slab (light weight), but still ... the slab will be separate to the house slab (no link) but will be abutting it. What did you mean with "But a massive fan of a vibrator" ?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... I've dug some footings to embed a post anchor into. My holes are around 450mm deep which I'll put a 200mm stirrup into. The bottom of these holes seem firm enough. … 0 3318 How good is Simeon?! Always taking time to help others out!
