Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 May 31, 2011 6:16 am Hi we're getting a coloured concrete driveway, colour is from concrete colour systems http://www.concretecoloursystems.com.au Is it recommended to seal the driveway? Also, we are thinking of getting it "machine trowel" finished (rather than broom or sponge finish), any ideas how slippery this will become after sealing? thanks daniel. You'll need to re apply it between 1-5yrs depending on the sealer and how long the manufacturer specifies vs how it actually holds up. Also the sealer should effect the finish much. The machine trowel finish may be quite smooth though. If you are after some texture for grip maybe broom or stipple finish would be more appropriate. I don't know much about the different finishes. Re: is it important to seal a coloured concrete driveway? 4May 31, 2011 5:40 pm the oxide in conc. isnt uv stabile and will break down (faid) so a sealer will be required. I normally use a coloured sealer over coloured concrete if the oxide (colour hardner) is cast over the top of plain conc. If the colour is in the conc. mix itself then clear seal. if you want machine trowel finish (it will be slippery) then add a non slip bead to the sealer for additional grip. Also you can do a pretty messy stipple finish (swirl finish) with a machine trowel but this is normally only done in commercial or industrial. dosnt look that good in domestic driveways etc Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: is it important to seal a coloured concrete driveway? 5May 31, 2011 7:07 pm Just a thought - have you considered doing plain concrete and then "resurfacing" it? You'd have none of those typically unwanted features, like too slippery or too swirly/busy, or non-uniform colour. The only thing - I am not sure if a decorative (resurfaced) concrete can be resurfaced again down the track (if need be) ... but hopefully it can. He did my next door neighbours exposed aggregate driveway and sealed his the same day he poured ours so about 6 weeks? However he hasn't mentioned anything about coming back and sealing mine! Apparently he is on 6 weeks holiday too! I have noticed my coloured driveway is streaking white residue (charcoal driveway) I think thats normal, but still needs to be sealed...
