Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 May 01, 2011 12:01 pm Hey everyone, We have been looking at getting a thin (7cm) slab to serve as a base for paving in our backyard, the area we are talking about here is 7m x 4m (28m2) and the prices I am getting are making my head spin! Both prices so far have been $2,500, that's almost $90 a square! The cost of the mini mix for the area is only $370, add crushed rock $100 and reo $?? and then labour for a few guys for about 3 hours, surely it couldn't be more than $1500! Am I too far behind the times? We have a couple more quotes coming in the next few days (if they bother to turn up or even call don't get me started) fingers crossed the average starts to drop. Any anyone recommend someone? Re: The price of a slab for paving!?! 2May 01, 2011 1:05 pm Personally I wouldn't get a slab laid to pave over it. Its wasting the concrete really IMO. Just use road base then sand, pave then use sand in the gaps with a little cement mixed in. Water it in and it'll set like a rock and no weeds will come up either. $90m2 is the average price for concrete laid. Re: The price of a slab for paving!?! 4May 01, 2011 8:59 pm Thanks guys, maybe $90 is what I end up paying but seriously!!?! That's something close to $1.5K of profit for a few hours work (at least), the materials and time simply does not justify the price, just because its a small job, pfft! We did have one more quote come in tonight, and that was $1800, and from a recommendation, at this rate I think we have a winner! I'd get a slab next time. "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Currently scaping the land. Re: The price of a slab for paving!?! 6May 01, 2011 9:14 pm We paid around $70m2 for plain concrete as a base for a shed. It took months to get the quotes... called around a dozen concreters, and only around 1/4 turned up and quoted. Re: The price of a slab for paving!?! 7May 02, 2011 9:17 am donuts this is exactly what we did and had weeds growing through the gaps within 8 months. Fair enough. My in-laws did this and haven't had any weeds in the section that was prepared as above in 8 years. they do have some weeds come through where only the grass was cut out then sand laid and paved but not where the road base was used. It was also dug out around 40cm deep to get the pavers level with the rest of the lawn that adjoins. Perhaps some form of weed kill treatment under neath as well then? Re: The price of a slab for paving!?! 8May 02, 2011 4:02 pm Thanks guys, I have already decided that the slab is going down. I've done a fair bit of paving before without a slab and the results after 18 months of use weren't that flattering, weeds and enough movement (not a lot, but enough) to annoy me. I have a crushed rock compacted base down the side of the house waiting for some Lillydale topping and it must be part weed fertilizer and part crushed rock, they are everywhere! I've poisoned them, I've pulled them out, I've tried swearing at them, all to no avail. Slab it is Re: The price of a slab for paving!?! 10May 05, 2011 1:11 pm We are getting 30sqm, concrete with the color paver pattern stencil. We are paying $1500.00. Our quote is from a friend of our Son, so we are really paying for the concrete and the wages for the laborers. If we had to pay another concreter I expect your price to be about the right price. Re: The price of a slab for paving!?! 11May 06, 2011 8:13 am Do they want another job? Always happier to get someone recommended than someone out of the paper, even if we do end up paying the same. deb17 We are getting 30sqm, concrete with the color paver pattern stencil. I havn't even been able to get them out to look at the area we are having done yet. If I could help you I would, but my DS said they are flat out. Even my DS who installs air and heating, said his boss can't even take on any new customers at the moment. It's amazing, everyone has to much work It's my DS, bosses brothers concreting business. My neighbour just had the same area done, it cost her double, and plain concrete. I had 28m2 of engineered pavers laid six months back and it was difficult to find someone not taking the pi$$. Internet suggested it should be $85-100/m2 to lay them.… 3 12399 As most others have posted above the install isn't compliant.
