Also I've never heard of anyone using treated pine for decking (I assume you mean the treads?) There are some good tips for decking maintenance here http://saversystems.com/wood-articles/151-11-keys-to-stain-your-deck-like-a-pro Re: When to stain a treated pine deck? 4Feb 14, 2011 1:37 pm Hey Niko, I completed a treated pine deck shortly before Christmas (had to get it done so the family had somewhere to sit!) and ended up staining it directly after the deck was constructed. From my readings on the subject, with hardwoods they suggest leaving it to rest for 6-8 weeks to allow any treatments to 'ooze' out of the wood before applying any stains. As APC or treated pine is a softwood (and most prob been sitting in a yard or warehouse for a few days or weeks) then the chemicals have mostly had a chance to 'ooze'. Use a good quality cleaning product and scrub well to remove any residues and grot from the wood, allow it to dry and then stain as per the stain instructions. The BIGGEST tip i can give you is to do it EARLY in the morning on a COOL day! we were doing it in 30degree weather and the warmer it is ( i think cabots say to do it in under 25deg weather) the quicker the stains set and the harder it is to spread evenly! Has been a few months now and no signs of issues with the deck, in fact im LOVING the stain it matches the interior flooring of our house almost perfectly! though i might suggest an oil instead of a stain? i LOVE the look of the little knots and grain! Re: When to stain a treated pine deck? 5Mar 09, 2011 12:19 pm We built a treated pine slat fence and left that for a few months before cleaning it and applying a merbau stain (both by Intergrain). With what leftovers decking planks we had we then built a deck under our portico out the front door, but because there was a time difference of many months and the timber had been exposed to the elements, as soon as the deck was up we cleaned (actually we cleaned before it was built so it would be ready to go) and stained it. With the fence, it lost a lot of it's "green" colour in the couple of months it was bare, then the cleaner basically bleached it so it was a clean slate to start with. We are really happy with the result, and because of the finish we chose we only have to clean and re-coat every 2yrs, so while the product cost a bit more to buy than oils, it is less maintenance and longer lasting. I will totally agree with the above poster about applying it on a cool, still day - any heat or the wind will make the stain (which the one we have primarily sits on the surface) dry really quickly and make for a patchy job. Also, use a paint brush, not a decking applicator broom thing. Second Time 'Round DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Are you going to have the frame exposed or are you cladding it with something.
