Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jan 10, 2011 12:48 pm Does anyone know if it is required that concreting around brick pillars have expansion joints (the foam) at the base? We've had our driveway and portico paved but there was no foam expansion joins at the base of the two brick pillars in the portico. I'm worried over time the concrete will crack (or break) the pillars. The Building Commission was no real help. Apparently the guidelines are AS3727 but have to track it down. Am a bit ** off at the lack of expansion joins used in the concreting in general that we've had done. If anyone can help that would be great Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Re: Building Standards for Residential Paving 2Jan 11, 2011 2:35 pm it is all situation dependant. at a min. i would have expansion joints cut in conc to pillars and generally i only use foam when an area is enclosed ie: against a house and a retaining wall or in an alfresco so the concrete is enclosed on three sides, driveway abutting crossover. Can you post a pic. There should be caulking around all edges abutting brick work with the paving not a rigid grout.
