Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Dec 16, 2010 10:22 am Hey all, Currently deciding on whether to bother spend the extra on exposed or just go with stamped + coloured for the driveway and entertaining area in the backyard. Besides look, one of my concerns is how easy/hard aggregate is on the feet. I remember not really enjoying the jaggedness of aggregate but apparently if you go the smaller stones (7mm for example), it's a bit better for that. And sandblasting is meant to be better again for the smoothness. I'd appreciate any feedback for anyone who's used exposed/blasted aggregate in their backyards in regards to comfort, as well as practicality and looks? What are the options out their for making it more comfortable? Thanks. Re: Exposed/Blasted Aggregate on the feet 3Dec 21, 2010 1:06 pm re paging! The smaller the stone the less grip the stone has to be integral as a part of the driveway. Gawd I'd be sending the kids to the fridge to get a can of tuffen up! Think of it this way.... save yourself the cost of a pedicure, deeptissue massage and Reflexology Remember the stone shape has a lot to do with the sharpness... as such you could get a small amount of the stone as a sample and see(feel) how rough it really is. The true exposed aggregate stone mix is not shards, but tumbled and natural stone size blend. Be aware of cheap imitations Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Exposed/Blasted Aggregate on the feet 4Dec 21, 2010 4:33 pm I have exposed in our backyard, alot of it too, and my kids run around on it non stop barefoot no worries. My 13 month old has also fallen over on it a few times and has a few slight grazes on his knees and legs, but not once has he cried over it. I think it looks fantastic and everyone comments on it. The kids and the dog are fine with it. Every now and then you stand on a bit that seems sharper, but most of it is pretty smooth rocks This shows you the mix of stones we have (pre sealed) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Exposed/Blasted Aggregate on the feet 5Jan 03, 2011 11:56 am Its a myth that you cant get smooth on the feet exposed aggregate.. ever grazed yourself on a pebble? some mixes have rough stone, some smooth. Best to see a sample for yourself first. Re: Exposed/Blasted Aggregate on the feet 6Jan 03, 2011 1:10 pm We went with exposed aggregate recently (driveway and paths, not entertaining area). We have found it surprisingly comfortable on the foot compared to some others we have walked on in the past. As many have said it depends on the stones/pebbles used and how exposed it is. Foot comfort was one of our big concerns too and initially we were convinced we would go for exposed aggregate that is then ground, and sealed. We saw samples and loved how it felt under foot. However price soon put an end to that idea. From memory it was about another $60 per square meter for the grinding. Re: Exposed/Blasted Aggregate on the feet 9Jan 19, 2011 1:54 pm I have pebblecrete with 5-10mm smooth stones, but it's still quite rough underfoot (much rather walk on stamped). One thing to consider is sweeping - because the pebbles are slightly raised, it's a pain to sweep, especially grass clippings. normette Building a Firstyle, Oran 30 aka THE BIG 'O' Re: Exposed/Blasted Aggregate on the feet 10Jan 19, 2011 1:55 pm I have pebblecrete with 5-10mm smooth stones, but it's still quite rough underfoot (much rather walk on stamped). We screwed it up a little when we exposed it though, i.e. its a bit patchy in places. Doesn't help having non stop rain and to top it off, we may of sealed it a little early. Hehe, but still! Looks not bad I haven't tried walking barefoot on it yet but I can't feel too much friction underfoot with shoes. Re: Exposed/Blasted Aggregate on the feet 15Jan 19, 2011 5:24 pm Sorta, I was the least experienced of the lot. Had a few guys screeding, few with wheel barrows and afterwards myself, my dad and another experienced concreter were exposing it as we were a bit worried with how quickly it was going off since it was very very hot sunny day. The next day, my dad and I went back to cut the expansion lines and clean it so it'd be ready for sealer.
