Re: Achieving black exposed aggregate finish 10Nov 04, 2010 12:08 am inverell Thanks for your replies onc_artisan and davinci- some very helpful advice. Ok, if I understood correctly then I need to ensure the following: 1. Ask the builder to add black oxide at 10% to the concrete. 2. Cover the driveway once poured. 3. Seal the driveway with wet look sealer as soon as the aggregate has been exposed. If you would indulge me in answering the following questions I would be very grateful!! 1. In relation to the mpa rating- would the concreter know to increase this automatically or would I have to specifically ask for it? My concern is that I don’t want to come across as demanding and a pain in the **** when I’m getting this upgrade for free in good faith. What purpose does increasing the mpa rating serve and what are the potential consequences if it isn’t? you need to arrange for this and the mpa increase 2. Is a wet look sealer a different product to regular sealer? Again, is this something I need to request specifically? sometimes are solvent based but also water based 3. If one bag of oxide is needed for one cubic meter and I have 30sqm to cover at 10cm thickness then I would need about three bags right? How much powder is in a bag (kg) and what would this cost?you need to ask the plant for this info 4. I’m concerned that you mention davinci that the colour additive is not UV stable. Should I expect a significant bleaching effect over time, or is it not that bad? I should mention that my house is south facing so the driveway will be mostly shaded. It'll be dark for years 5. Davinci, I’m a little confused by your fourth line where you say any colour can be added to any concrete base. As per your example does that mean I should ask for charcoal based concrete and then add the black oxide at 10% to it? I thought that the base is always the same (regular grey concrete) and that the oxide is what gave it the colour.black charcoal is different to blue black 6. Are there any regulations relating to driveways I can access online similar to the Building Commission’s ‘Standards and Tolerances’ guide?Google is your friend 7. Lastly, in your professional opinions do you think the Salt and Pepper mix with black oxide at 10% will look anything like the top picture in my original post (or no but still look nice or perhaps look like crap)? It will look black with black stones ... opinions differ so not possible to know if you like it or it looks crap Ok, I know I’m pushing my luck asking so many questions so I will stop now! Hopefully your answers will benefit other readers too- thanks heaps! Cheers guys, inverell Where you are coming from is where you are going to...
