Trying to come up with ideas for our driveway and a small patio area. We don’t like the look of exposed aggregate and we are hesitant to use coloured concrete as we fear cracks will eventually appear, so the idea is to use pavers. We have seen some that we like which are about 400mm x 400mm and we will most likely DIY the job. I have a handy family so the muscle in getting it done or the tools needed is not a problem, I’m just not sure on a few things.
1: What base do I use, concrete slab, sand, crush rock. The ground is bound to move if we don’t use something like concrete, but I like the idea of compacted sand or crushed rock as it means I can repair any areas that sink or rise a little easier.
2: Is there a particular pattern the pavers should be laid in?
3: Do I need to space the pavers or can they butt up against each other. If I do space them, what do I use to fill in the spaces?
4: I know I need to put some sort of edging in to keep the paver in place, but what is it that is commonly used?
5: Are there any particular pavers we should or should not use, if we are going to spend that sort of money on pavers, I want them to last and still look good in years to come.
Any opinions or assistance would be greatly appreciated
