Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Jun 27, 2010 4:54 pm Hi, We are paving an area of 50 square meters (a pergola area) using 400X400 clay pavers 5cm thick. The question is how level do we need the compacted road base to be considering we are also going to be using about 2.5cm of sand on top to lay the pavers on. We have been using a dumpy so we quite accurately know the level that the top of the sand needs to be. What sort of tolerance is acceptable in the level of the road base, ie the thickness of the sand over the area? We have accounted for drainage away from the house. Any replies greatly appreciated! Thanks. Re: Road base for large paving job 2Jun 28, 2010 7:40 am You would need the roadbase as level as possible - its the best way to ensure a flat paving finish.
