Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Apr 10, 2010 9:46 am We just had our exposed aggregate flooring laid in our alfresco area and it has been washed back too far. Is there anything that can be done about this? We're happy with the look of it but it's really rough. We didn't opt for honing in the first place because we like the textured look and feel but it's ended up being way rougher than we expected. All I know is that the concrete guys washed it back that day which may or may not be to blame? Can a certain amount of honing be of assistance here or does that need to be done before the concrete sets? It's been 10 days now. Any advice would be great! Re: Exposed Aggregate 2Apr 10, 2010 3:39 pm We are frequently called in to sort out this kind of problem, it happens all the time so you are no orphan. I would recommend a light grind to take the tops off the rough stones then seal with a good quality solvent based sealer. The fact that the slab is 10 days old is not a problem at all. The newer the concrete the softer it is. It can be done at any time really just affects the choice of diamond segment that the contractor will use. Hard bond for fresh concrete and soft bond for older harder concrete. It is also quite normal for the concrete to have been washed the same day, if it is left too long the cement paste cannot be washed off the surface. Hope this helps Slugger Re: Exposed Aggregate 4Apr 16, 2010 12:54 am Hi rezso, I'm a fan of exposed aggregate. Do you mind telling me how much it cost for your alfresco? Can you post a photo? Close shave exposes about 1-2 mm of stone and standard exposed which is 3-5mm. The exposure is about what the client wants, but the correct exposure is for the stone to be 'clean' whatever the level of exposure. ...that is why an acid is used to remove residual cement and then sealed to give a lustre to the stones. As far as a cost for grinding the exposed to remove sharp bits, that pretty much depends on the job itself and the levels of grinding and polishing required. However, the starting cost would be in the $33 sq mtr range and up to $80 for a polished top surface( like little mirrors) and the effect if it can be afforded is very good. At first it looked good but there are what looks like drip marks near the bottom. It was sealed the day after pouring and this is what seems to be leaving the run marks. The owner who would not come out and look and is pretty arrogant, said there was nothing he could do and it would fade in time. Does anyone know if this is true and if it does fade.. how long will that take. Its been a month or so since it was done.
