Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Apr 08, 2010 3:34 pm I am doing some paving in my backyard, just wanted to find out from experts which is a best paving sand to use , I have been told by some retailer to use concretic sand while others have said to use washed sand, which one is better to use or are they the same. Re: Paving Sand-which is best 2Apr 08, 2010 4:22 pm we used pave-set which has a cement type substance in it. you sweep it in the cracks and hose it down to make it set. but it won't stop movement if your pavers arent on a concrete slab base. Re: Paving Sand-which is best 3Apr 09, 2010 8:20 am I will be using some crushed rock which I will compact to make the base , on top of that I will put some paving sand, and that where I am not sure which is the best paving sand to use, once the pavers are placed will use some gap sand or joint sand for inbetween pavers. Re: Paving Sand-which is best 4Apr 09, 2010 10:07 am Forest, Bluemetal dust (crackerdust) is the go - easy to work with & sets like concrete witha bit o water and thumping. As with all paving, compaction is critical. Compacted subgrade, 50mm compacted cracker dust, 10mm loose cracker dust bedding sand - can't go wrong. Can grout with cracker dust too but better if you sieve out the bigger bits and mix a bit of cement with it. Re: Paving Sand-which is best 6Apr 09, 2010 12:38 pm I paid nothing. When I see a pile of it on the verge I ask inside if they need it all, usually they say take the lot, dont need anymore. I use it all the time, make footings with it for laying blocks on, back & front fill with it. It is great to work with. Shovel it onto a trailer & away you go. It is fairly common around here, may be not so abundant where you are. edit - btw, subgrade is the bit under the crackerdust ie you need to compact the base first, then 50mm cracker dust (compacted and screeded off to level) then bedding sand (crackerdust).... Re: Paving Sand-which is best 7Jun 19, 2015 12:05 am In relation to the types the OP mentioned: Concreting sand or washed sand. These should both be OK to use as the bedding layer for paving. Concreting sand is the same as plastering sand. They are both washed clean sands, devoid of salts and clay. Whereas the brickie's sand has clay in it. The manufacturer paving guides I've read say for example, from Midland Brick: For the bedding layer - "A well graded concreting or plasterers sand is considered suitable, however, bricklayers and single sized dune sands are not suitable" Here is the kicker. I am actually in the middle of organising 150 sqm of paving, which includes the driveway and porch and pathways. Last week I spoke with a professional paver who has been doing it for 25yrs, and has done lots of work for builders, and he said that he uses brickies sand for the bedding layer. !?? Even after I told him what the manufacturer's spec (concreting/plasterer's sand), his response was "Don't believe everything you read." Does anyone else have an opinion about the bedding layer - brickies versus concreting (washed sand)? I'm putting a new floor in my kitchen, slate flagging on a standard concrete slab. I have allowed for a bed thickness of up to 20mm to accommodate the different… 0 17545 2 4356 |
