Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Aug 05, 2007 4:35 pm As my name states I'm clearly hopeless with all things reno - and I'm in need of help!!!
Our backyard is as small as they come and it has been done up (before we bought) in a mock country cottage style garden (I say mock because they haven't done a very good job). It makes the space look ten times smaller and renders it useless for anything really (giant garden bed smack bang in the middle, paving on one side/gravel around the sides and then only room for some ugly border plants). Our front fence is made from some old bricks that match a small wall that we share with our neighbours (in the backyard) - that are also the same as a patch that is paved at the front of our deck. The bit that is paved is too big and wastes too much valuable space (that could be lawn) - I would like to pull them up - but pull them up in a fashion so that I can re-use them else where in the garden (small path way etc). Is there any secret to pulling them up? Can they even be re-used? What would I have to do to them to get them to the point of re-using? What equipment would I need? TIA for anyone who is able to help hopeless old me Re: Pulling Up Brick Paving - Reusing? 2Aug 06, 2007 6:52 pm Are the bricks packed in together or are they hed together with mortar?
Regardless just lift them with a crobar or mattock. If they have been mortared in you'll need a lump hammer, a cold-chisel and a few arvo's of boring tedious work to clean them up Re: Pulling Up Brick Paving - Reusing? 3Aug 06, 2007 6:59 pm ummm Pretty sure they are put together with mortar.
Sounds like I've got a fun time of it ahead - is it very easy in terms of the labour in to chipping off the mortar? will I give this to my husband for a job to do?? Should I know anything else in terms of damaging the bricks? a way to hold it/a certain action.....Oh I'm such a novice -- or what ever comes before that - I think novice is reaching a bit high Thankyou so much for your help - I reallllllllly appreciate it Re: Pulling Up Brick Paving - Reusing? 4Oct 15, 2007 8:06 am purchse a cheap air compressor super cheap have them and purchase an air chisel you can get all this for around $200 speeds process up by 10 fold
when cleaning off bulk amounts of mortar no matter how you clean them expect a wastage of around 5 - 10 % Re: Pulling Up Brick Paving - Reusing? 5Oct 15, 2007 5:02 pm Thanks everyone !!
In the end they came up easily - they were just packed together And we are now selling the house and the potential buyers want as is so we don't have to worry about any of it - just leaving all the of the bricks sitting in a nice big pile for them to use if they want ! Re: Pulling Up Brick Paving - Reusing? 6Oct 15, 2007 8:18 pm And there in ****** a key item in selling a house.
Leave just enough work to the new onwers to think - hey I can do that and make my stamp on this hosue But not so much work that they go - Holy Cow (insert other words) that place needs so much work - we will never have a life. Enjoy your new place. Steve Re: Pulling Up Brick Paving - Reusing? 7Oct 15, 2007 8:41 pm We’re pulling ours up…..and throwing them away.
The builder….my neighbour…..put sooo much mortar on them their not worth cleaning!
