Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Dec 21, 2009 8:14 pm Hi everyone, This is my first post here sohope I am doing this right . I am building a forno oven in my back yard and need to lay some concrete I have gone to the local bunning ad looked at their pre-mix cement and have worked out that th pre mix bags are very expensive and that the better option for me is to by cement and get the sand and gave seperate and mix it together. Now my question is how can I work oow much sand and gravel I need and how many bags of cement I will need to get. The footing is 30cm deep 30cm wide and 8 metres long. Then I will be laying a slab that will be 10cm deep, 60cm wide and 4 metres long. There will then be a heart that will be 1.63m by 2 m by 120cm. Any help would be appreciated as I will be mixing this over xmas and the d suppliers I belive go away for a couple of weeks over xmas. Thanks for the help ikhan42 Re: Help with concreting 2Dec 21, 2009 8:21 pm Yeh right... That is about 1.5 cu mtrs of concrete. or 15 barrows (large barrows) I love my concrete I hope you have brekkie that day(s) Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Help with concreting 4Dec 21, 2009 9:16 pm Yes yes & yes Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Help with concreting 5Dec 21, 2009 9:19 pm alot of people try to save a few bucks by making the concrete from scratch and end up with a ******* looking job when the reality of the task sets in, its really not that much more expensive getting it delivered. I agree with ozberg Re: Help with concreting 6Dec 22, 2009 11:17 am Thanks for that guys. I considered the concrete truck option my main problem is tht the concrete has to be lifted about 1.5 metres over a wall and I dont think a concrete truck is going to wait too long and they charge $60 per 30 mins waiting time so this will end up being avery expensive exercise. I need to do two slabs so ordering a pump is also not an option as the 2 slabs have to be laid a week apart to allow the first slab to set to take the weight of the second slab. They charge $400 per 4 hours so just for a pump it will cost me $800 then $600 for cement and then lets say 2 hours waiting time so I am looking at a slab that ill cost approximately $1600. I am not to worried about the finish as it will never be seen I just want to do something that is going to hopefully be cost effective and not going to cause me to much friction with the concrete truck driver. As for getting a friend to help thats become a hard task as friends are few and far between after I fell into depression. so back to my original question any idea how much sand and grave I would need to order and how many bags of cement mix? Thanks again ikhan42 Re: Help with concreting 7Dec 22, 2009 3:29 pm Hi ikhan42, For domestic footings your mix should be around 1 part cement, 2.5 damp sand and 5 parts aggregate, probably a bit of overkill for what you want but it can't hurt. Been awhile since I had to figure out quantities but found a nifty estimator on Cockburn Cement website, just google it as they don't seem to like links on this forum. Looking at their guide you will need around 20 bags of cement (20kg), 0.6 cubic metres of sand and 1.4 cubic metres of aggregate. Pop down to your local hire store and get yourself a mixer and off you go, good luck! Andy Re: Help with concreting 8Dec 22, 2009 3:32 pm better make it a 3.3 cu ft one... only 15 mixes or so Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Help with concreting 9Dec 22, 2009 4:07 pm And as ikhan has pointed out, its not all going to be done at once... Re: Help with concreting 10Dec 22, 2009 4:15 pm The following is true but you get 30-45 mins to discharge even on a short load as you pay extra for less than 3.2cu When we first came to town the plant was 1 truck and we are 10 mins from town... So we batch by hand(mixer) about 4 cu's for slab extentions and footings. Took 2 days with 3 blokes, it can be done but hard yakka if you have to mix and place/finish. ikhan42 Thanks for that guys. I seem to use more than I calculate. Good luck (dont pick a hot day if you can avoid it). When i was young and silly we mixed piers and slab for a double carport by hand, on a hot day in summer. I think my arms are still sore!! It will be neat but you won't have much freeboard. At least they are not weep holes. Are you in a high intensity rainfall region?
