Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Sep 15, 2009 2:36 pm Hi all, I'm thinking about having a path around the entire house, both for ease of access, and also because it's a part of the recommendation from the soil test results: "Proper site drainage is very important in reactive sites such as this site. It is therefore recommended that the ground surface immediately next to the perimeter footings be graded away at approximately 1:50 within at least 1500mm. A concrete path is futher recommended." I have a fairly flat block, gently sloping downwards towards the road (200mm fall). It's a standard H-class slab, which is pretty common, but I've noticed that most houses don't actually have any paths around the house. I'm not really doing it for drainage though, I'd just like to be able to walk around the house more easily.. (especially as I have eaves). So anyway - back to the question at hand - has anyone actually done this? Is is cheaper to pave, or to concrete? Any approximate costs? (It's a 22sq house, three bedroom, double garage job..... Not the biggest place, but still big enough!). Re: Concrete / Pathed path around entire house 2Sep 15, 2009 3:28 pm Yes,we have 1m cement paths around the entire house, I like it too, and our house is aprox the same size as yours, but cant tell you how much it cost as it was included in our house/land package. Re: Concrete / Pathed path around entire house 3Sep 15, 2009 3:36 pm We are pretty much doing that aswell and we are having coloured concrete with is $50 p/m. Plain concrete is around $45 p/m. Work out the total area and then you can calculate an approx price. Also, a 80cm wide path is a good size too. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Concrete / Pathed path around entire house 4Sep 15, 2009 3:58 pm So.... if I take my house plans and calculate the rough "length" around the house...
Then: [rough length around house] x 0.8 x 50 = rough cost? (0.8 being 80cm wide path as suggested, 50 being $50 per metre squared). In that case... it'd be around $2,300 for a path around my house... (driveway & porch area are included with the house). Not as bad as I thought it would be! At the same time I'd get the pergola area done - 3.5m x 6m, for around $1,100, and the clothesline area & shed area... to plan ahead for the future. Now that I sort of have an idea for that cost... is it cheaper to instead have the area paved? Or is there any benefit of paved vs concrete? (possibly easier to rip up paving temporarily to fix pipes?) Stenciled is around $70 p/m and exposed agg is $90-$95. But coloured or plain should be fine. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new.
