Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Mar 29, 2009 6:52 pm Hi guys. AM getting quotes for about 100m2 of paving. Im getting varying ideas from guys about using a sand base on crushed rock or using mortar on crushed rock. Some guys are telling me they will only use mortar or will not do the job, where the guys who want to use sand are saying that mortar is overkill.. Price wise there is obviously a bit of difference, but in the end i just want a good job that will last. Any hints? Re: PAVING ON MORTAR OR SAND 2Mar 29, 2009 11:21 pm Hi booyeah74, We did some paving ourselves, using a 5mm gravel base then a mortar bed. This was finished in Jan, and so far it's stood up really well- no movement whatsoever... that said, if you have clay soil, even a mortar bed might move over time. Backs of pavers will be pasted with cement water glue mix to ensure adhesion to mortar. • Grout joints with 3:1 sand/cement grout mix with oxide added if required for colour match • Sponge off excess grout • Acid wash and pressure clean paving when grout has cured • Site clean up and removal of any landscaping rubbish (Please note: Sealing of paving is not included in price, but is highly recommended and can be supplied at $10/m2 plus GST) Everyoe i have asked to quote seem to think the concrete while great is overkill as there is no vehicle to be parked on the paving area. Re: PAVING ON MORTAR OR SAND 5Mar 30, 2009 8:49 pm rock moves, then your pavers move, grout cracks and crumbles, pavers shift up and down creating lipping, grout joints go out of line, the list goes on sand / rock&mortar paving is the cheaper option but how long do you want it to last 5 yrs or 30 yrs sand / rock&mortar paving is a good starting point for the DIY to save on cash etc but do your home work it may be better to get concrete with paver pattern cut into it if you plan to move in next few years get as per plan also have a walk around you local area, how many paving jobs etc have moved etc they are all on sand etc Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: PAVING ON MORTAR OR SAND 6Apr 06, 2009 8:44 pm davinci all paving should be on a reinforced concrete base with mortar and laid with wet bond method ie : base of paver and conc. pasted with cement and water paste for it to last Agreed, without question. In our street there are 4 paved driveways. Ours is the only one on a reinforced concrete base. The other 3 have all moved significantly over the years. Ours is 6yrs old and still looks as good now as it did new. 2 8883 I'm putting a new floor in my kitchen, slate flagging on a standard concrete slab.
