One option is the exposed aggregate, it costs a bit more than plain coloured concrete but not totally out of reach. When I went looking at the concrete supplier the other day for colours, the man there noticed I had kids and said he wouldn't recommend exposed for us, as kids will fall over and rip their knees apart Looking at the concrete close-up I can see how it eould be easy to do! Apart from the $1k or so we will save from going plain coloured concrete, I am now leaning towards plain coloured because of this. Anyone else have any experience/feedback with this? Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 2Dec 03, 2008 9:01 am I have been wondering the same myself, and because I enjoy messing around with cars I also wondered if they'd be harder to clean should a little grease get spilled. Hi Donuts, exposed aggregate can be made with small smooth pebbles, not the sharp little buggers. I've got 2 little whipper snappers myself and will be getting exposed aggregate. Dont know about you, but I dont think my kids will be constantly falling over on the driveway with no pants/jeans on The trampoline I'm about to buy worries me heaps more, ha ha ha Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 4Dec 03, 2008 10:16 am I would be more worried about the stipples or brished finished on normal concrete that the exposed ag I have out the front.
The stipple have little raised edges that if fell on would do some real damage! The brushed has a similar effect but would be less damage I think. The exposed ag compared to these doesnt scare me at all! Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 5Dec 03, 2008 10:31 am Hi Donuts, I don't think there's anything to worry about with having an exposed aggregate driveway
I was born and bred in a third world country where most driveways are made of exposed aggregate (only the rich folks had concrete! go figure)... i remember instances of falling over on both types of driveways and i can honestly say that neither one hurt more than the other! on another note, some of my relatives didn't have the brushed concrete so it was quite slippery and easy to fall over on (specially when it's wet)... Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 6Dec 03, 2008 10:39 am I remember slipping in pools that had exposed ag as the walls and floor and man that cut us up as kids, but might have been worse cause the skin was all waterloged by the time we hurt ourselfs, might have made it easier to cut on the surface *shrugs* Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 7Dec 03, 2008 12:33 pm ok thanks guys, seems there is not much to worry about then, or rather things to worry about no matter which way you go!
I might check with concrete guy to see if he can do some smooth pebbles rather than sharp ones. Now my decision is difficult again!! Do you mind sharing how much have you been quoted for the concrete (exposed as well as plain colored) per m2? Thank you Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 9Dec 03, 2008 8:42 pm Hi Hysterical,
no problem the cheapest of my two quotes was: coloured concrete $1320 exposed agg $2210 Plus excavation (approx 4 hours $360-400) plus dumping fees of excess soil (approx $60?) This is for 24 square metres. As it is all broken down, and not exact figures, it is hard to give a price per square metre. My driveway is not that big. Also I have to check with him, forgot to ask at the time, whether the coloured concrete is coloured the whole way through, or just the top layer. I think there is a difference and I think I want it coloured all the way through... not really sure about this though. In spite of that, we've still had exposed ag done on our own driveway. $3200 for 31 sq metres, everything included. And I got a dark colour, with plenty of black quartz added to the mix. It's lovely! And my kids managed to rip their knees up on our old pattern-paved driveway, many times. Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 12Dec 05, 2008 12:22 pm thanks for that kek. I am still weighing it up, might ask my concrete guy if he can do some smooth pebbles, or polish it down some more to be smoother...
Have you got a pic of yours kek? Going off to check blog... Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 13Dec 05, 2008 4:10 pm Kids will always fall over
I still have two patches on my knee from 23 odd years ago when I was running down a hill at school, tripped and ripped a nice chunk out. Is your driveway long enough for them to be constantly running up and down it? If your worried then make the kids play in the backyard Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 14Dec 05, 2008 4:13 pm You can get carpet burn!
I agree with Matt, concrete is just as bad. Get it sealed…..then they can slid off. I was hoping the supposed danger of exposed agg would just make my decision for me. Now that I have all your views that it ISN'T so dangerous (and no ed, our driveway isn't very big at all!) ... you would think that I would be saying, great let's do exposed then!?? But I am not. So I think I am just not in love enough with exposed aggregate to want to spend an extra $1000 on it. Practical decision #1 made!! Although I have already spent that $1000 on lots of other things... Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 16Dec 05, 2008 10:09 pm I've got some lovely scars on my knees I could show you ... they're about 30 years old and still quite distinctive. Mind you, I slid on my knees across an exposed aggregate driveway (road width). It was not fun. I hate exposed aggregate, pebblecrete, etc. We're going with coloured concrete.
Judie Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 17Jan 16, 2009 2:01 pm You could always stone grind the agrigate to smoothe them off a little after.
Or just pour concrete and diamond grind the top 7mm off for a smoothe agrigate finish (good grip if you dont polish after grind) Machine costs about $300 per day and can do approx 40 m SQ. Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 18Mar 19, 2011 3:18 pm Donuts did you get colour concrete,I was going to have decking on 3 sides of house[ranch style]starting thinking about maintainance recoating with oil.I am know thinking concrete maybe aggregate or coloured.could I see some pic.Ps this is also for other H1 members to give me some input. Re: Exposed aggregate - dangerous for kids? 19Mar 19, 2011 8:08 pm hi pattycake, yes we did get get our coloured through concrete but unfortunately the colour I picked ended up looking just like normal concrete here it is freshly laid and here it is after it's dry, it's actually a picture of the front gate but you can see the comparison between the driveway and footpath, it's pretty much the same.
