Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Nov 09, 2008 11:52 pm I had my front yard concrete last week with char grey stencil pattern. The next day we have noticed several white marking on the surface. The concrete guy came back twice to wash it off with some chemical but still there are several white marking. Also the yellow color boarder are fading. How to fix this and how much? Its $70 per sqm total 150sqm, I have already paid him $8200 and told him i wont pay anymore until its repaired. I have contacted few concrete ppl to ask them to and see what they can do. the colour if sealed should not fade, but as the concrete cures the colour will lighten even after sealing Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: white patches on newly laid stencil;char. grey 3Nov 11, 2008 3:08 pm I thought I was the only one having this problem. My charcoal coloured stenciled driveway was done early August this year. I started noticing white salt-like powder appearing on the driveway as the concrete dries. The concreter advised me it's normal and will go away after he hoses the concrete with water, dries then seal it. The day after the concrete was sealed, it looked good, the charcoal colour stood out with a bit of gloss from the sealant. However as days past, the white powdery residue started re-appearing.
Now, 3 months down the road, my driveway looks worn and faded from that powdery stuff, as if it's been done 3 years ago instead of 3 months. I hardly use my driveway too except to drive my car to and from my garage. I took a walk around my neighbourhood to compare and it seems to me charcoal coloured stenciled driveways suffer from this issue more than other colours, i.e. the white residue is more obvious. I'm just wondering if there is a cheap fix to this. Or is there a fix at all without having to re-do the whole driveway. Ed Z. Re: white patches on newly laid stencil;char. grey 4Nov 11, 2008 6:15 pm I have asked my concrete guy if he had put sealer on the stencil yet, he said no , not required. I have spoke to few ppl who does stencil ;3 out of 4 said sealer is required. Is this correct? Total front yard size is about120sqm, there are about 10 to 15 white patches, will this eventually disappear since it was only done about 10 days ago??? Also the yellow boarder color has faded a little. The finish job looks like it has been there for few years rather than newly liad so disappointed... How often do we require to have touch up to ensure the color last on the stencil? Should I get a specialist to come and paint the white patches. I spoke with my concrete guy tonight and he said if it was coloured crete a few coats of sealer would fix it. Because its stencil you just have to ride it out. The colour leaching is normal ( ) as is the salt. It is a combination of what is in the ground and the concrete. It may take 6 months to go away. Sorry Re: white patches on newly laid stencil;char. grey 7Nov 13, 2008 2:43 pm Hi there,
To be honest with you there are not allot on concreters that know how to do stencil properly. The 'white patches' you have described are caused by trapped moisture, most likely you would have had some rain or moisture in the air a few days before or after the job was done. However, yes you can fix it, just sounds like your concreter doesn’t know how or has lack of experience by not knowing how to do so. We have a concreting business in Brisbane and are often called by angry and upset clients who have used someone else and have the same problem. It can be fixed by using an acid wash and sealer. Yes, you defiantly need a sealer on the stencil, most concreters usually tell you that its not required because you have to wait 2-3 days for it to set before the sealer is apply, and they cant be bothered coming back! The quality of sealer will also make a huge difference.
