Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Oct 08, 2008 8:13 pm We recently bought a Kenwood steam mop, but it doesn't seem to have any instructions.
Does anyone know how to use steam mops? lol 1. How much water do you put in? (we put in 2 cups but it seemed too wet) 2. How long does it sit and heat up for on its little heating pad thing? 3. How much steam is meant to come out as opposed to water? Should floors be visibly wet and glistening or dry but steam cleaned? Thank you! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How to use steam mop!? 2Oct 08, 2008 8:41 pm Howdy Grace, I bought a steam mop a few months ago, because I am such a savvy shopper I got it through DANOZDIRECT!!!! I probably should have gotten something a little bigger because I have to keep filling it frequently, it has a small water thingy anyway, there should be a gauge on the front where to fill it to, my little DD heats up almost immediately, the steam comes pouring out as soon as it heats up. My floor is visibly wet and glistening but it dries very quickly, quicker than the usual mop and water thingy. I have noticed if you don't mop your floors every week, the steam mop just pushes the dirt and dust into a corner, it doesn't actually mop it up I have now gone back to the mop and bucket I get extremely overheated when steam mopping too which is something I do not need.......OVER AND OUT ... but wait there's more Re: How to use steam mop!? 3Oct 08, 2008 8:46 pm GS, you need to fill the mop with water to the top and leave the mop sitting on the pad until the light goes off (or comes on?) Your floors should be wet but as SuH said they will dry very quickly. Also when the light comes on (or goes off) after using it you need to top up with water and again let it sit until it's ready to go again.
Love my steam mop Happy at Home Re: How to use steam mop!? 4Oct 08, 2008 8:58 pm House-To-Be GS, you need to fill the mop with water to the top and leave the mop sitting on the pad until the light goes off (or comes on?) Love my steam mop I would love mine if I didn't have to top it up so often, but you get what you pay for I would go a bigger one next time. The drying factor is a plus as well as no streaking! Craig Re: How to use steam mop!? 8Oct 09, 2008 4:11 pm Luke warm water. That makes sense. lol We just used tap water. *dumb* heheh, thanks! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How to use steam mop!? 9Oct 11, 2008 11:19 am Did you read the instructions ??? I bought one of those years ago, and all the info was on the instructions...
One thing is to use distilled water = like what you should use in an iron. The mop usually comes with a little cup with a spout, from memory my instructions recommended 2 cups (provided measuring cup) of distilled water. This stops calcium build up happening inside the mop. Too much water will leave the floor too wet. The correct amount of water used in the mop usually dries within 50 seconds to a minute. I used to put a little of my floor cleaner on the pad thingie as I luuurrve the smell of the product I use... Mine stopped working after 2 years, I didn't replace it as I found the mop and bucket just as good. - Plus it is soooo windy here, as long as I have every door and window open in my place after mopping it dries in a flash. and also to add, you need to drain the mop of water before storing - after use ! The water will go rank in the mop if it sits in there for a few days - this is in the instructions also. Re: How to use steam mop!? 10Oct 11, 2008 2:33 pm Hi all,
Just wondering what sort of flooring you all have? We've just put down solid wood tassie oak, direct stuck and the guy said never use a steam mop as it will make them warp. Is this true? I have a mop from our last place which I loved using, now it's just sitting there. Would hate to use it and damage the floors. Thanks, K Re: How to use steam mop!? 11Oct 11, 2008 3:28 pm I've got solid Jarra and cork (very 80's lol) - I'm just waiting for it to come back in fashion.....These things do come back !! hmm. not sure about Tassi oak. A few years ago I had a couple of the rooms re laquared, I asked the floor guy, he had no idea. Geez, I'd hate to ruin them tho ! I use a product called 'wood magic' (pledge) on the floors, it's fantastic. You just use one capful per bucket of water. Re: How to use steam mop!? 12Oct 11, 2008 7:09 pm I've got tiles.
Anyway, there were no instructions! This is why I came on here asking how to use it specifically. lol All it had was the box, which had brief pictures and descriptions but didn't really tell us anything, and the mop itself with a little cup. That's it! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! That's it! omg, I feel like such an idiot !! I read your post a couple of times, and thought, I'll have to reply to that later, then I did, but forgot you said you got no instructions. SORRY xxxxx Well, more info for you is, - be careful when heating it up, especially if the phone rings, I thought mine would be fine sitting on the pad, -yep I forgot I turned it on. Well the steam from the side caused the laquare to bubble on my cork, and it's in an obvious spot. Warning - If you need to refill the mop during a clean, wait for it too cool down before unscrewing the cap, steam comes out of the cap hole when you undo it, yep I burnt my fingers.... sorry again x Re: How to use steam mop!? 15Oct 12, 2008 10:11 pm zozzles23 Willow I've got solid Jarra and cork (very 80's lol) - I'm just waiting for it to come back in fashion.....These things do come back !! I have been a hands and knees scrubbing afficianado for floors but my scrubbing days are drawing to a close so I am now looking for the easy way of doing things wherever possible.
