Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We were told by a friend that this is fine as long as they cover the area with something. However, we just found out that the tiler just tiled on top of it. The tiles just sits on the bath tub. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Not sure if you can see it, but there is a gap between the tiles, you can see inside the frame and there is no backing or waterproofing. We are worried that water may get behind it and damage the timber frame. Plus, the tiles can easily get punctured with no backing. How do they even grout the tiles there? Does anyone know if this is acceptable? Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 2Sep 27, 2008 6:56 pm This doesn't look right to me.......it's a wet area isn't it??
As you're in NSW, ring your state Building Commission and get the number for your Building Advice & Conciliation section of NSW Consumer Affairs. They give great advice, especially our one in Vic. Have you spoken to your SS? Get them involved straight away as they may not be aware of it as they very rarely attend the addresses to supervise their tradesman!!! Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 3Sep 27, 2008 7:29 pm Thanks Izzy.
We tried calling SS. He said it is best to meet onsite next week. However, the tiler is finishing off the tiling today. I'm not sure our SS can see what we mean. We will definitely give fair trading a call on Monday. Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 4Sep 28, 2008 9:38 pm Hi Sammy,
Don't know about other builders, but we got that as well. They only put the dark coloured water proof thing on the floor, shower and about 1 tiles high around the wall... Since you guys are not using C&L, hopefully the quality will be better. Just one reminder based on our bad experience: make sure during inspection you fill the bath tub with at least 75%-80% of water, then get your hubby (or whoever is the heaviest in family or relatives) to step inside. See if you can then see a crack on the surrounding area of the bath tub where it joins with the tile. We are still waiting for AllCastle to fit it. They keep saying it's C&L's problem, C&L sent the tiler to check it, but he said it's not his problem as he only do the tiling not the bath tub, and then it get pushed back to AllCastle... I will give them another week.... Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 5Sep 29, 2008 9:59 am Thanks Alan.
They only waterproof the bas of the shower and the floors. They did not even waterproof the walls (except where the nails were). We questioned this and was told that because they use fibro cement for the bathrooms and not gyprock, so it is waterproof. The thing is, there is NO fibro cement where they cut the hole so there is no barrier to protect the timber house frame behind. We will definitely fill it with water and see. Thanks. Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 7Sep 29, 2008 2:03 pm Thanks Clarity.
Yes, it is the same as display. We asked a different tiler last week (he was giving us a quote for tiling after handover) and he said it is common practice as long as they put something behind it first before they tile over it. We are meeting our SS today to discuss this and point out a few other things that needs to be fixed. Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 8Sep 29, 2008 2:07 pm Good luck at the meeting with your SS.
Hope he gets it fixed ASAP. Great to see that you're at painting stage, have they given you a handover date yet?? Shouldn't be too long now (of course they must fix the bath tiling and make it waterproof) Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 9Sep 29, 2008 2:19 pm No handover date yet. But painters are busy. They even work on Sat and Sundays! It will be a while. The tiler even tiled the ensuite with the wrong tiles etc...... Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 10Sep 29, 2008 2:44 pm sammy No handover date yet. But painters are busy. They even work on Sat and Sundays! It will be a while. The tiler even tiled the ensuite with the wrong tiles etc...... Wow, wrong tiles too!!! Hope thats sorted out today too! Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 11Sep 29, 2008 10:47 pm I work for a bathroom reno company, and we always waterproof all wet walls to the height of the tapware. This insures that if a tile cracks, the water wont get through to your plaster.
While its not a requirement for them to waterproof the walls, its better that they do. Built with Bentley homes in Doreen All moved in Dec 2009 Now for the garden! Our stuff so far viewtopic.php?f=31&t=16532 Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 12Sep 29, 2008 11:40 pm The blocks around the bath is hebel. The bath could have been built in a timber frame and clad with Villaboard, waterproofed, then tiled but hebel I think is a better way to go.
I haven't really seen tilers waterproof areas apart from shower walls, floors and bath hobs but as Lostris mentioned, it should be common practice. Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 13Sep 30, 2008 10:55 am Thanks Lostris and KWOOD.
Yes, I just found out that the blocks are Hebel. And the boards are Villa boards. Do you work in this industry? However, I don't think the carpenters placed a timber frame around the bath as you can see from photos. They only waterproof the base of the shower and around the taps. Nothing on the walls. And none around the cut out villarboard near the bath (see photo, the blue bits are the waterproofing) and there isn't any around top of bath tub. You can even see the timber frame and wall insulation! Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 14Sep 30, 2008 12:07 pm Sorry to add confusion but a timber frame around the bath is an alternative to using hebel but IMO, I think hebels better...
Around taps, the tiler would normally use silicone where they penetrate through the villaboard rather than waterproofing but you can do both for the best result. I would recommend that the full extent of the shower walls be waterproofed...AFAIK, that's standard practice. I was a little concerned about the huge channel required to fit the bath in place. I assume that strips of villaboard will be used to patch that up before the tiler commences! For your information, I am a construction management student at UNISA and work in a contruction firm in Adelaide. Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 15Sep 30, 2008 2:42 pm Thanks KWOOD.
I thought you sound like you know what you are talking about! Yes, we were told by a tiler that you should use some villaboard to patch that area up. SS told us it should only be around 3cm to fit bath in. But it seems like 6cm to me! Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 16Nov 03, 2008 11:10 am Just like to update what's been happening in regards to this.
Our house is almost finished. We have not had a response from the builder in regards to this issue. We decided to contact our principal certified authority. We were not sure how helpful they may be as they were paid by our builder. One of the mandatory stage of inspection was the waterproofing before the tiles were laid. I sent them an email with photos attached voicing our concern. CPA said it is normal but will talk to our builder. Just got back from the builder and our CPA. It would seem that our builder is willing to rectify this problem. They will remove the bottom row of tiles adjacent to the bath tub, patch the area with villaboard and then re-tile. So a lesson learned. CPA may be paid by the builder, but worthwhile contacting if there is an issue you are not happy about. Re: Opinions on bathroom tiling 18Nov 03, 2008 12:08 pm Yes, Southies. I think it took almost 2 months! Each time we bought it up, SS said they will look into it. Contact PCA last Wed and got a resolution in less than 1 week! Looking to tile the facade pillars rather than rendering. Builder is quoting 2500$ laying cost for upto 10msq. The 2 pillars come to be 16msq. So laying costs are 5000$… 0 7524 Hi, I'm clearing the tiles from our horrid 50 year old bathroom and preparing to lay new ones. Bugger of a job getting the old… 0 8084 4 14438 |
