Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 25, 2008 5:59 pm Hi! Can you please advise if its normal to use the bathroom tiles all the way to the shower area? Is it not dangerous? Or should it be different? I normally see a white type of flooring esp for that wet area.
I'd appreciate your help... cheers, Hannah Re: Shower floors 2Sep 25, 2008 6:52 pm I think its normal - at least ours are like that and our current house is too and my parents house and my sons house - they all have the bathroom floor tiles continued into the shower alcove, is that what you mean?
It's the usual thing in SA anyway. (though whether our bathroom ideas are 'normal' has already been the topic of much debate ) Re: Shower floors 3Sep 25, 2008 6:54 pm No this time you're normal Helyn.
In my current rental we have a polymarble shower base.... but in the house we are building, the tiles will extend into the shower. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Shower floors 4Sep 25, 2008 7:13 pm In our previous home which we renovated, we installed a Marbletrend shower base. Fantastic to keep clean : http://www.marbletrend.com.au/index.php?page=4&ranid=3&proid=37
However, we didn't want to have another expensive variation with our current build by installing the same base (though I would have loved to) so went with standard tiles instead Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Shower floors 5Sep 25, 2008 7:31 pm We are having a normal white shower base but I wish we had upgraded to having the tiles ... think it gives more of a sleek look...
Maybe just make sure the tiles you choose for in there are not slippery if you are worried about safety issues. Re: Shower floors 6Sep 25, 2008 8:55 pm It's not dangerous acm2269, we have had it in all our showers/bathrooms. It's funny really, in the shower I don't slip on the wet tiles, but if I step out onto the dry tiles with wet feet, I usually go for a slide. Maybe it's not that funny Re: Shower floors 7Sep 25, 2008 9:06 pm Thanks, guys. Its safety I am most concerned of.
- Su, I agree. Funny how that really works - not slipping while inside the shower, yet it does get very slippery once we step out of the shower! cheers, Hannah Re: Shower floors 8Sep 30, 2008 11:18 am I think it depends on the builder. More new houses now seem to have tiled shower bases. I prefer the look, although I will soon find out how practical and safe they are when we move into our house. When we were choosing tiles for our new house I made sure any that were for floors were matt (or a bit more of a rough finish if that's a better way to explain it). My sister has shiny floor tiles in her kitchen and bathroom and whenever they get wet or you wear socks you go sliding. I didn't think shiny tiles were made for floors but it seems that they are. They are dangerous. All tiles have the ability to be slippery, but some way more than others.
Prior to renovating we had a tarazzo floor base in our shower. It was never slippery. I don't mind that option either, really hard wearing, but once again wouldn't even go down that road with a volume builder. We also used outside tiles for our kitchen floor, they were fantastic. Even when wet or wearing socks never really had to worry about slipping. Just don't drop anything glass on them, it shatters everywhere. Didn't even contemplate using them in the new house because I couldn't cope with what the upgrade cost would be. So I think it's just a matter of finding the right tile, the less shine the better I think. Maybe there's a slip factor for tiles, you could check with whoever supplies the tiles for your builder. Re: Shower floors 9Oct 02, 2008 8:11 pm If you have tiles throughout the bathroom and into the shower, try to have the area in the shower lower than the bathroom floor so that you can get a fall to the shower waste (puddle flange). If you can't, you may need a hob (raised area around the shower) to stop the water flowing back there is evidence to suggest that the bathroom door. Also make sure the waterproof membrane is installed by a professional, as far as I'm aware, Victoria is the only state that does not have a pre-tile inspection by the Building Surveyor (Certifier for those in NSW). At least in NSW all new home have the waterproofing inspected prior to tiling - sadly this is not mandatory in Vic, thus we have countless bathroom leaking problems. Re: Shower floors 10Oct 02, 2008 9:21 pm Every house I have ever lived in has had tiles throughout the bathroom. Re: Shower floors 11Oct 02, 2008 9:49 pm donuts We are having a normal white shower base but I wish we had upgraded to having the tiles ... think it gives more of a sleek look... . O we have a shower base where we currently are (old house) and I love it DH doesn't, but it is so much easier to clean - no mould, only soap scum. I just get a chux kitchen sponge with the green scourer, pour on some domestos & srcub of the excess.... BEWDIFUL. Not looking forward to a fully tiled shower... And yes Hannah, we have the floor tiles in the shower, they actually go on top of the bath to make the bathroom look longer (well that's the idea any way). If you change the texture of the floor tile in the shower make sure the tiles are the same size i.e 400x400. Makes it easier for the tiler!
