Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 23, 2008 10:10 am Hello there people
My new apartment, though lovely, has yuck plug holes in the bathroom sinks. Is it possible to replace the plug holes with new ones? When I say possible I mean fairly easy and inexpensive and that you don’t have to remove and replace the entire sink? And when I say plug hole I don’t mean fit a new hole exactly, I mean just replace the existing white yuck plug hole thing with a nice stainless steel type one. Can you buy plug hole things? How much would it cost for someone to come and fit them if I can’t just pop it in myself? (and if I could pop it in, would it need to be sealed around the edges so it wouldn’t just float out again and such) Thank you! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How much for a new plug hole? 2Sep 23, 2008 12:56 pm haha you sound like me "plug hole thing", my latest was "bond board place".
Anyhoo, I don't know the answer to the question! sorry =P I'm sure I've seen them at bunnings but I wouldn't know how difficult it is to remove in the first place. Re: How much for a new plug hole? 3Sep 23, 2008 10:18 pm To replace the waste, you need to unscrew the p trap from it, which can sometimes be difficult to do. If its really old they can sort of fuse together. you may end up having to replace the p trap in order to do it Built with Bentley homes in Doreen All moved in Dec 2009 Now for the garden! I haven't enquired or anything but you might want to take a look.

(No, the ones in the basins and sinks!). Plughole doesn't seem right .
I hate it when I go to a hardware place or something and have to resort to using my hands and words like "thingy" and then get soundly put in my place! Other women seem to cotton on to what I mean but with (not all, of course!) trade type men I feel like I am trying to speak a foreign language. It reminds me of when I was overseas - and especially in France - where I KNEW I was speaking it correctly, or at least enough for them to understand what I meant, but the natives just stared at me with such a smug expression as if I were speaking Swahili !! Re: How much for a new plug hole? 7Sep 30, 2008 10:57 am That thing looks perfect!! Not sure how they do it, but that’s precisely what I want. Our plug hole drain things are in good condition as far as I can see, but I just don’t want them to be white. I want stainless steel. I’d actually love something that catches hair. My hair is fine but I have a lot of it and I moult all the time, and the drains at our old place were constantly getting clogged by my wayward hair. Lol.
I’ve seen something on Ebay for shower drains (more important than basin drains in terms of hair issues) that have a hair catcher that you can easily remove and replace once the hair’s been disposed of. Sounds exactly what I want, but it’s once again from America so I have no idea if it’d fit easily or if any tradesmen around here would be able to do it easily. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Hair Strainer "Thingy" 8Sep 30, 2008 11:13 am I think I can help you on that one. At least I think it's what you mean. My daughter and I both have long hair and it drives me nuts trying to unbung the drains all the time!
I got something called a Disposable Hair Strainer, a packet of 10. The package guff is "non woven fabric sticks to shower outlet and traps hair. Each unit lasts many units.Just remove when necessary and stick on a new one." The packet says the manufacturer is Handi Homes and distributed in Australia by Handi Home Supplies Melbourne. Hey, I got them in Perth so that means you can get them ANYwhere!! From memory it was our local Mitre 10 hardware shop. I don't think they were terribly expensive - certainly a lot less than a plumber and a lot safer than having to put down chemicals etc. What's wrong with acting like an ostrich and burying your head in the sand sometimes? They sound good, as long as they stay stuck on the plug hole and don’t float away in the water. Lol.
Yeah, we’re always having to buy sachets of Drano to corrode the hair in the drain when the shower once again becomes clogged and the water won’t flow. How the hell did I become a senior member!? Re: How much for a new plug hole? 11Sep 30, 2008 1:08 pm I actually really like that hairstyle! But it would look vomit-worthy on me I’m afraid. lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? Bathroom plug surrounds etc 12Oct 21, 2008 2:31 pm Not sure whether you resolved your problem with the ugly plug hole things but thought I would offer some feedback on the company I happened across - "Mend A Bathroom". I finally got around to having them in for a quote and thought people might be interested in the prices I have been quoted as a rough estimate.
I have two chips to the bath enamel and have been quoted $230 for these to be filled, enamelled and re polished. The bath is ivory so I think a white bath would be easier to colour match and the price might be lower. The plughole surrounds are $66 each for a bath one and a basin one. I also have some quite bad calcium deposit stains and erosion around the bath outlet and the basin taps. They are going to polish these out for a total of $75. Not sure whether I am going ahead with this, but they also enamel over tiles. I have horrible mosaic tiles throughout the wet areas including the shower recess floor and I am thinking of having these enamelled over in the same colour as the bath and basin. The bathroom, laundry and loo floors themselves I will get re tiled later in a toning colour. The shower recess base is about a metre or so square I think and I have been quoted $484 for this. Much cheaper to retile of course but I am still considering it as it may be a nicer finish and less messy than ripping up and replacing the tiles. I can report back later after the job is completed but this may give anyone interested a rough idea of costs. Sometimes with this stuff if you are a novice as I am then they could quote anything from $50 to $5000 and I wouldn't know the difference! So far i have not noticed any issues with doors and windows. Builder advised they will organise drainers to inspect 2 weeks ago but no further… 7 18805 7 12010 |
