Sales guy at Harvey Norman told me if I dry more than 2 times a week then heat pump is better. He also told me that heat pump dryers don't dry to 100%, but instead to 95%. To get that last bit, just line dry or put on the extra dry setting on the machine.

We love ours, but are "heavy" users - 3-5 or so loads a week. When we bought we calculated a 8 year pay back, but recorded an actual drop in electricity usage giving a 4 year payback compared to a basic vented dryer.
Combined with the collection of water via condensation, rather than venting, I can say we are exceptionally happy.
