I have never managed to avoid damage to the plasterboard.
It's been a case of at best doing a plaster skim of the plasterboard and at worst replacing an area.

How can I safely remove these wall tiles without damaging the plasterboard?
As bashworth has said, it’s very hard.
Is it plasterboard/Gyprock/drywall or blue board/Villaboard/fibre cement sheeting?
Plasterboard will be the most difficult. Your best chance is to carefully cut the tiles into strips with a diamond blade on an angle grinder and then gently chiselling behind each piece. The adhesive will have adhered to the paper over the plaster, so you are trying to sacrifice that and hope that you don’t take chunks of plaster along with the paper.
