Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 29, 2008 5:54 pm Hi guys, just wanted some opinions - we have our tile selection appointment tomorrow (yes thats right due to another stuff up by our builder we haven't selected tiles yet even though they are plastering our house as we speak!)
I wanted to know what everyone thought about having totally different looks in the ensuite and main bathroom? I think we are going to go a fairly contemporary look in the main bathroom (will post a pic later of a bathroom I might copy) with two different tones of brown 'brick' tiles. There is no door on our ensuite and I want the main bedroom in a sort of vintage french style (does that make any sense at all?? ) so in the ensuite I was thinking I might just have the floor tiles continue in the shower to have a more classic look which will suit whatever decor we end up with? Re: Another tile question?? 2Aug 29, 2008 5:59 pm Hi Sharee,
I think two different looks are fine. After all the two bathrooms serve two different groups. Adults and kids. Our two bathrooms are using the same tiles, but the main bathroom is red with charcoal and white. The ensuite will be a far more subtle grey with white an charcoal. I like the idea of different colours and/or themes for different bathrooms. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I think that is the idea I'm leaning towards, although I'm a little worried some people might find it a little disjointed when we eventually sell? It won't be for quite a while though and like my DH says they are only tiles and they can be replaced Re: Another tile question?? 4Aug 29, 2008 7:06 pm I've been flicking through heaps of my home mags lately.
It's really only display homes that seem to do the bathrooms the same. In so many of the mags, featuring renos and new builds people do different tiles for different bathrooms. If it's good enough for home mags, it's good enough for us! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Another tile question?? 5Aug 29, 2008 7:44 pm Oh oh! I'm an odd ball - I have kept our bathroom and ensuite exactly the same - right down to the feature tiles But for me it was more to do with the fact I had such a hard time choosing 1 colour combination that i actually liked that the thought of 2 would have killed me!!
In our current house (modern townhouse) they have used the same colour scheme (cupboards and QQ benchtop) in the bathroom, ensuite, kitchen, powder room and laundry...it makes it easy to match towels etc, pity I don't like the colour scheme they have chosen though My karma ran over your dogma Re: Another tile question?? 6Aug 29, 2008 7:52 pm Bel I wasn't meaning that only displays homes ever do it the same. Just in the mags I have it's the displays homes that do it the same.
My previous place had a bathroom and ensuite the same. I think bathrooms and ensuites are like laying tiles and features. There's no right or wrong way, just personal choice. Does anyone think it will be bad for retail if there are different tiles in each bathroom? Although I suppose it will still be within the same scheme, ie same floor tiles in both bathrooms but with ensuite having the floor tiles continuing in the shower and the main bathroom with slightly bolder tiles within the smae colour family! Aaaah I don't know, what a stupid thing to be stressed about!! Re: Another tile question?? 9Aug 29, 2008 10:40 pm The bathroom & onsuite in my house are totally different. Completely different tiles and vanities. Even the scheme is different - one has the same tile on the floor and all the walls and the other different floor/wall/shower tiles. My thinking was that I wanted the onsuite to master to look a bit special and be a bit of a surprise from the rest of the house. Most of the PD displays I saw had different schemes in both rooms (not hugely different).
The only thing I'd recomend is stick to one trend: either both contemporary or both victorian or both resort style etc. Don't have one contemporary and one older style because it will look silly. Also keep to similar color tones. Of course I'm no expert... I really think that whatever is the norm right now can easily be outdated in 5-10 years and if you're doing something purely to be in keeping with current trends that won't necessarily be the current trend in the future. A perfect examply is looking at houses 5+ years old you will see a kitchen style laminated vanity with sunken basin and powder coated taps. By todays standards of wood finish laminated square edge benches with chrome taps and salad bowl basin its a very dated design. 5 years from now it's possible people will hate the look of woodgrain lamiate and salad bowl basins - who knows?
