Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 26, 2008 2:40 pm If I had to name one thing I hate about my bathroom its the fact I have a shower over the bath - I detest them!
I have played with the layout tat many times and there is no physical way to split them... except to bash down the wall that connects the bathroom to the tiny linen cupboard. Only problem with this is that it will cost sooo much more and there is a plumbing pipe in the which may make it not feasible anyway. But the linen cupboard is practically useless with the pipe in it so I am not concerned about losing it as I planning on putting a storage cabinet in the laundry. So the options are: 1. Leave it as it is and just replace the bath and vanity (as they are a charming beige colour which always looks dirty), re-paint, re-tile & replace the skylight. Also would make it so that there was a step into the bath/shower 2. Get someone in to see about bashing down the wall & convert into more bathroom space but may look a bit weird as it would be in its own little section Opinions? Trying to make it mine! Re: Small Bathroom Advice 3Aug 26, 2008 2:57 pm The picture from the door is here:
https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=8956 It is really small - towel rail is behind the door on the left, linen cupboard is behind the vanity Trying to make it mine! Re: Small Bathroom Advice 4Aug 26, 2008 3:08 pm Get someone in to see about knocking the wall down. If you hate this layout it's for your benefit to try to split the shower and bath plus it will also improve the resale value for the future. Win/win for you!
Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Small Bathroom Advice 5Aug 26, 2008 3:14 pm Do you think you could fit the shower or toilet back into where the linen cupboard is to fit a small bath and a separate shower?
Have a look at this site for some small bathroom layout ideas... http://www.ideal-standard.co.uk/ Re: Small Bathroom Advice 6Aug 26, 2008 3:26 pm The shower would fit into the linen cupboard and I'd have to make the vanity smaller which is do-able.
The toilet is in a seperate room altogether - it backs onto the linen cupboard in line with the bath if that makes sense. I think it may be far too expensive but I just would love to be able to seperate them. The other option is to make the front room smaller which I'm not too keen on at all Trying to make it mine! Paula posted this pic, I think of her bath in another thread. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=8696 You could use this idea as a step into your bath/shower and update the tiles etc . You don't want to over capitalise to much on your place and I agree pushing a wall out would be good resale, but you might not need to go to that much trouble if you are able to just update. Good luck and I might still have the number of a good bathroom guy if you don't have one yet. Need to ask hubby if he remembers the name. Re: Small Bathroom Advice 9Aug 26, 2008 4:15 pm Thats actually where I got the idea for a step as I loved it and hadn't seen it before.
Personally as much as I hate the shower/bath combo I think it has to stay without it costing me a fortune. Thinking maybe something with a glass door as that way I don't have the shower curtain that I detest Trying to make it mine! Re: Small Bathroom Advice 10Aug 27, 2008 9:52 am Well the room dimensions are 2100 (L) X 1500 (W)
If I find a very compact bath and shower it would be possible to seperate them I think. However I only have 700mm on the side where the door opens Trying to make it mine! Re: Small Bathroom Advice 11Aug 27, 2008 10:09 am Hi Sassy,
Are you attached to having a bath? I know I am. I love to soak my bones after a hard days work in a nice hot bath! But with your space constraints, maybe you are best to strip and renovate the bathroom, and have a nice sized shower recess instead of a bath. Many smaller places don't have a bath. Also, being an apartment, there may be practical limitations where you can have things. Which level is it? Are there other units above you? If so, removing walls will have strict codes that you will have to comply with, and may not be possible, as walls are considered for the structural integrity of the whole building. (TDL might be able to advise on that). Hey, if you love your baths, you could still get one of those big standing baths like in the cowboy movies! You could have a cowboy themed flat-warming party! Ash. Re: Small Bathroom Advice 12Aug 27, 2008 10:23 am Hey Ash,
I'm not attached to having a bath but my boyfriend (who doesn't live with me but comes down 3 - 4 times a week) definately is. I don't think I have used it since moving in 5 weeks ago and I think he has used it probably 4 times. The bathroom will have to be completely stripped and I really don't want to have to go wall bashing if I don't have to as all I can see is $$$$ in relation to doing that. It's a unit so ground floor and no one above me (plus a lil backyard for my pups). The UK website Rachelle posted is great but I can't see anything vaguely like some of their products on Reece etc Trying to make it mine! Can I challenge this first point....why? There are better options than vinyl curtains, and much trendier ways of doing the combined shower and bath....I'll dig out some photos tonight. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Small Bathroom Advice 16Aug 27, 2008 12:31 pm 1 more vote for getting rid of the bath, and screening off the whole end of the room to make a double shower. Rip out the old bath, re-tile and one new shower screen.
I like having baths occasionally, maybe once a month. The rest of the time our dirty clothes and towels pile up in there and it's a massive waste of space. The one and only reason for keeping the bath in our new place is for when we have kiddies. So that's something to think about, are you still going to be living there when you make babies? If not, it doesn't seem worth it. Re: Small Bathroom Advice 17Aug 27, 2008 1:10 pm I don't plan on having kids there lol! However it is in a family area and the primary school is at the end of the adjoining street so when it is time to move on the fact there is no bath would be a disadvantage.
My sister has looked at renting it off me as well and when I mentioned it to her she said she couldn't if I ripped out the bath as she has a 2 month old currently and would need a bath. I think the area not being an affluent area you would notice if a bath was missing Trying to make it mine! Re: Small Bathroom Advice 18Aug 27, 2008 2:35 pm bummer. maybe you could make the door a sliding cavity, then you could put a half size bath on the left and a clear shower in the right corner...?
Could you try rought up a floor plan so we can see how little space there is? Re: Small Bathroom Advice 19Aug 29, 2008 12:45 pm Sassy_Bud Thinking maybe something with a glass door as that way I don't have the shower curtain that I detest Hi Sassy_Bud, I too have a shower over my bath and with 2 kids will be using it regularly. As my bathroom is tiny fitting only the bath and pedestal sink I cannot seperate them. I too detest shower curtains, we plan on replacing the bath with a deeper one which is made for over top showers and we will be installing a pane of glass which are especially made for showers which run along half the bath on the end with the shower. it pivots open for easy access and cleaning. It's going to cost $350 to purchase but way worth it as I wont have to fight the shower curtain everyday. Hope this helps. Peter If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. I did measure the room the other day and it is 2100 l x 1500 w As the door takes off 800 on the width the only possible way would be if I could find a 700 x 700 shower and that leaves me just under 1400 for bath length but finding one thats only 700 wide has been hard Trying to make it mine!
