Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 20, 2017 11:51 am G'day everyone. So, taking the tiles all the way up to the ceiling, just in the shower. Not all of the en-suit/bathroom... This topic has come up in conversation a few times and I'm just wondering what your thoughts are and if any of you have done it, have pictures etc... Re: Tiles to ceiling, just in the shower? 2May 20, 2017 12:24 pm Personally, I think it would look odd having it to the ceiling just in the shower. Tile to just above the top of the shower screen if not doing the whole bathroom, but to the ceiling if doing all the walls - but that's just me Re: Tiles to ceiling, just in the shower? 3May 20, 2017 6:43 pm We are having subway tiles to half height on the walls, but are running 300x600 tiles on the floor all the way up the shower walls to the ceiling. Don't think it will look odd at all. Haven't even started building so can't show photos but think it sounds like a good idea. Re: Tiles to ceiling, just in the shower? 5May 20, 2017 9:00 pm Not a great photo, will get a better one tomorrow, but we did it and it looks fantastic. Should know what that looks like on Wednesday. Re: Tiles to ceiling, just in the shower? 7May 20, 2017 10:49 pm Main problem will be where the tiles meet the cornice. In normal floor to ceiling tiling you leave the cornice off until the tiles are done and then install the cornice. That way you see the bottom lip of the cornice all the way around. If you just tile the recess all the way to the ceiling you will loose that bottom lip where the tiles abutt the cornice. Personally I'd prefer to see the same margin all the way around the cornice. Some cornices will be worse than others. If the cornice has a deep bottom edge such as stepped or square edge cornice it wont be so bad, but standard coved cornice might look a bit ordinary. Some may not notice it though. This topic has come up in conversation a few times and I'm just wondering what your thoughts are and if any of you have done it, have pictures etc... We ended up doing tiles all the way to the ceiling on three walls. The shower and side wall will be in the same tile as the floor. One wall where the sinks and bath are will be white subway tile in brick lay. We are only at frame stage so far so don't have any real pics yet. We had planned to do same but there are few people saying it impacts the cornices. Not sure what to do now? We had planned to do same but there are few people saying it impacts the cornices. Not sure what to do now? The tiles just butt up to the cornice. We have standard cove, 75mm I believe. They had trades everywhere today so I didn't grab a better pic, but I'll try tomorrow for you. I wished halfway through our planning phase that I had done our ensuite like that, then I could have had a feature tile between the mirror and the bench and just simple tile to the ceiling in the shower. How well it works will depend on the layout I think. I have some pictures I saved when I was considering it. Credit to the internet, no idea where they came from now. In that situation it is fine to run to the ceiling just in one section. The problem will be where you tile full height on one section of the same wall. You loose that bottom edge of the cornice. I'd always stop the tiles at screen height unless you plan on cornicing after tiling. It just looks like an after thought if you tile to the underside of cornice. As I said though some may prefer the compromise to get the full height tiling without the cost. All personal opinion really. However it's hardly a big cost to make the bathrooms square set. I think ours were under $200 each. The cornice issue is something that would bother me, but probably not everyone, a lot of people just aren't detail orientated and wouldn't notice. Re: Tiles to ceiling, just in the shower? 15May 24, 2017 4:33 pm I honestly don't think it looks odd! I tried to grab a pic today but it was too sunny. PCI is tomorrow so will have another crack. I was in a house on the weekend and she had the tiles up to the cornice and it looked fine as the rest of the room was that way, for example, the painted plaster on the wall next to it ended at the cornice, so it all evened out to the eye. The shower looked great as the tiles to the top, made that entire section look like it was owned by the shower, not just to the top of the shower screen. Thanks for sharing pics and discussing the topic folks. Really finding it interesting. Re: Tiles to ceiling, just in the shower? 17May 24, 2017 10:05 pm Found out that in our place, they will tile almost up to the ceiling then put the cornice on over the tile to give a neater finish - that's what I've been told at least, will find out what it looks like soon. They make the room much easier to clean for one, reflect more light (if light colour tiles are used), and you dont end up with dust on the top edge of tiles (cause most… 3 9594 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
